Mariners still flying high.

Timmah, a question for you and other CCM fans: what's up with CCM's crowds?

For a club that is looking like finishing in the top 2 for the third straight season, barely averaging 10k is disappointing. 12-14k should be the goal I reckon. Back in the early HAL seasons when your form was less consistent than now, crowds were much bigger. Have they made tickets more expensive? Or is it because there are more home games than in the early seasons that demand can't be sustained?

Sydney is red and black.

Great win. It is amazing how WSW have been in the comp for 5 minutes yet already are a more stable club on and off the field than SFC.

No surprises when the Mariners are flying high, instead of putting paid to their great football, we get dragged down into a crowd debate.

Until Melbourne Heart, with a city of 3 mil and daily mainstream media, are drawing in more than 3 men and a dog, I'm not going to discuss CCM's crowds.

So, you've got no excuse for the Coast's failure to turn out because the usual excuse isn't there? Bravo, good sir.

The Heart are getting torn apart over their crowds on the football dedicated board I frequent. Their failings don't excuse the Coasties for failing to turn out when their side is playing good football week to week,

It was an honest question, Timmah. Why were crowds higher in that 2005-2008 period when CCM weren't as consistent as during this 2010-2013 period?

And if Heart had the success CCM have had over the last 3 years, they'd draw far more than CCM is now.

I personally think it was a foolish idea introducing a second Melbourne team without any real identifying factor to differentiate them from the Victory. Ether introduce them in a distinct geographical area (or a separate area like Geelong) or give them some kind of affiliation with an NSL club so they can borrow their identity.

Look at how WSW differentiate themselves from Sydney FC. The Heart need to do something similar to avoid just being the second Melbourne club.

The crowds were solid without being spectacular in 2007-08 during the height of the F3 Derby rivalry (and prior to the GFC, mind you). They've never stayed consistently high to be fair, it just looked better because we played finals matches ad nauseum against Newcastle and Sydney.

The answer is simple and people refuse to accept it. Instead of viewing them as facts, they're viewed as excuses, and until the FFA throws better marketing $$$ at the clubs, then it's never going to change.

1. The Central Coast region has, by a long way, the smallest population base of any of the A-League clubs.

2. The Central Coast doesn't have the benefit (or opportunity, depending how you view it) to get themselves into well-circulated mainstream media on a daily basis, at least not to the same effect any other A-League club does. Every other A-League market has a daily newspaper, major television channels based in their city, and high-rating radio.

In my mind, crowds across the league dipped significantly and marketing for the A-League disappeared when the WC2022 bid went into overdrive. All the funds were diverted there and the popularity of the league fell away.

The other thing to note is that CCM fans do respond to "event games". Our crowd vs ADP/Sydney FC was 3/4 of the ground, the NYE and Jets derby generall pull good numbers - our best period is always the summer period.

It's also gotta be affordable.

Thanks for the measured and well thought out response, Timmah. I don't think the OP meant to attack CCM when he asked - it's a genuine cause for curiosity.

Gallop recently said in an interview that the FFA would like to co-operate with clubs to address these lower crowd figures. It was, according to Craig Foster, a stark change from the previous administration's preference to blame all issues on the clubs themselves.

Hopefully we'll see some positive changes soon.

I hope so. I'd like to think all clubs, in particular the Roar, Sydney FC and Heart are all punching well below their weight.

I also think Perth and Adelaide are shortchanging themselves by playing at ridiculously small stadia.
