Okay I'm bored.
So here's some stats with my biased view.
Defensively our backs are killing us. It's making our bare bones back row work overtime in defence, covering both their inside and outside man, as well as marking their own man. This has to change fast, otherwise we are only going to get wins when other teams give them to us.
Naturally all fullbacks aren't in a defensive line so their stats are hard to include Needless to say Tedesco's defensive record is better than that of Brett Hodgson's in his time at the club. (Hodgo as well all know would hold up players reaching out for tries every week, yet had a tackle effectiveness % in the high 40's). Tedesco has made 21 tackles and missed 10, with 1 ineffective (65.63%) so not too shabby.
Nofoaluma - 48 made, 15 missed, 4 ineffective - 71.64%
Simona - 59 made, 4 missed, 3 ineffective - 89.39% (he gets a pass)
Naiqama - 109 made - 15 missed, 12 ineffective - 80.15% (the ineffective is a concern, as these are mostly from rushing up and in on his opposite number but not effecting a tackle)
Rankin - 20 made, 7 missed, 2 ineffective - 68.97%
Moses - 84 made, 26 missed, 5 ineffective - 73.04%
Brooks - 56 made, 19 missed, 8 ineffective - 67.47%
These numbers are not good enough
In comparison, Littlejohn played 1 game, made 19 tackles and missed 3 at 86.36%.
Not every half has a % that high, but high 70's should be a target. Ineffective tackles by halves can be forgiven as they have help either side coming in, but missed is a big concern, as they are creating holes.
Another issue - The teams wants to play expansive footy but there's f**k all second phase play. All of our props and back rowers combined have made less offloads than Nofoaluma so far this year. The problem with a winger giving away a heap of offloads is that generally, all the second phase play is only going to head in one direction - back in-field.
Not one Tigers forward has made more than 2 offloads this year.
Our threequarters have made too many errors as well. Nofoaluma leads the way with 9, Naiqama with 7, Brooks has 6, Rankin and Simona have 5.
In good news, our big men are doing well with hit ups. Woods averaging 9 metres per hit up, Ava 8.54m, Sue 8.97m, Grant 8.28m. Backing them up are Aloiai with 8.03m and Lawrence 8.19m
Generally speaking, getting over that 8m per hit up avg is a sign that they are making some extra metres after first contact.
No surprises here, Buchanan coming on against tired men should be doing better. He is averaging 6.25m per hit up. Just no impact. Even Lovett and Halatau are getting half a metre more per hit up and they're smaller.
We have 2 players with more than 20 Tackle Breaks. Tedesco with 40 and Nofoaluma with 41. Naiqama has 19, Rankin 15, Lawrence 10.
Brooks is running the ball more than Moses. He's had 8 runs more despite playing 1 less game. It would seem that when they are playing their natural games, Moses is the 7 and Brooks is the 6.
