BILLY RAYNER
THE TRUE LEGEND

He was originally from Yass and then Parramatta
When you look at the breeding it didn’t much flatter
After a couple of starts that were really make or break,
The talk around Parra was we’ve found a great rake.
He played with some goodens in the time he was there
Bowser, Fordy, Thirsty, Grumpy, Big Red and the Mayor.
He was an Eel and a Blue and later a Roo
With team mates that read like a whose who at the zoo
There was Chook and a Tiger, a Magic Dragon named Reg
And Norm “Sticks” Provan with giraffe size legs,
There were many more to mention and the odd goose,
On his Kangaroo Tour he shared a room with the “Moose”.
He had many a tussle, no better than Ned,
They still talk of the day they thought Billy was dead,
As the scrum broke up and he lay on the ground,
You could hear a pin drop – there wasn’t a sound.
The trainer ran out with his bag in his hand
With a smell of the salts he soon came around.
Billy couldn’t go off – no replacements you see
The crowd gave a cheer when he got to his knee
He finished the game with his trademark grin
After playing his part in a most memorable win.
Now he’ll shortly arrive at the Pearly Gates Bar,
Once word gets around they will come from afar.
To share a laugh with the bloke they called “Funny”
He wont have to shout ‘cause they’ve all owed him money.
There’ll be plenty of talk and lots of great chatter,
They can talk on forever –up there time doesn’t matter.
And we’ll shortly head off to a Parra Leagues Bar
Where it all began for this great Rugby League star
We will all reminisce with a bit of nostalgia
And all toast a hero – Billy Rayner – a true legend of Parramatta.
