Wow, how unprofessional. No surprise then they under-performed. Who was their coach?

Matt Parish.

Spent too much time whinging about the difference in pay between countries than he did training them by the sounds of it.

Sounds like the Samoan boys were indulging in the hotel buffets a little too much........

Well, if the NRL was serious about it and relinquished control to the RIFL...

Players sign for nations. That's how you declare. Nominal fee + match payments.

Nations "loan" players to clubs for a fee - the cost of their national contracts - and this fee is counted under the NRL salary cap.

Effectively, the national bodies get their money back and so spend nothing except match fees, which is what currently happens. No one would need any additional money.

I'd prefer the NRL to simply write it into the league rules that IF a club wants to receive their grant each year, they must release players for rep duties.

Either that, or the ARLC can separate out the rep content from the next TV rights deal and restrict the clubs from accessing it.

Sounds good to me.

Just curious, when has a representative player returned from duties to the their respective club overweight?

Brad Fittler returned from the 1990 Kangaroo tour a fat slob.

Our Samoan players at the Raiders must've been hitting the cocoa rice and chop suey hard during the WC...oh and of course the Samoan delicacy that is KFC.

This is a decent idea but wouldn't work until at least 2 scenarios eventuate.

1. There is enough money in international league to pay the players what they are getting paid now, if not more.
2. Internationals are the main/most popular aspect of the game which is why cricketers and rugby players are contracted to national bodies.

I don't know if I can ever see either happening in Australia.

A first step might be paying the players from League Central.

Why the lol? International RL would be a joke without NRL players as evidenced by the recent WC.

Only the top tier nations. There is thriving second tier of international development happening not featuring a single nrl player. There is a lot more to rugby league than the nrl and SL level!

It seems the answer would be having a international marketing contract through the rlif. Along the similar lines as the Nrl marketing contracts. If the companies that sponsor the World Cup and/or teams like oil and gas (png) threw some money to D mead or others, it would help companies feel engaged with the sport. if the top 3/4/x players got sponsorships from there native gov/sponsor and helped promote themselves/the sponsor or gov programs it would bring in money that would otherwise be lost. (I feel a % if the marketing contract should be given back to the rlif as a finders fee)

If marketing contracts were available for clubs (capped), Nrl and rlif levels I think it would help keep players in rugby league as well as open up the game to other sponsors/companies that can use a players IP.

The one thing everyone is ignoring, if players were centrally contracted, you would be need to increase your administrative spending as the NRL would need to employ more industrial relations specialists who are capable contract negotiatiors.

They could redirect the $3million that is going to the integrity unit, not like they are actually discovering anything that doesn't involve a whistle blower.
