Are they referees or are they trainers?

You can say what you want about Gus Gould, he is a whiny senile bitch 90% of the time, but every now and then he makes a point, usually about officiating that turns out to be pretty salient.

During the Broncos Dragons game the Dragons were struggling to get to their kick on the 5th, and the ref screamed at the Dragqueens players "it's the last!" about 5 or so times before they finally got boot to ball. Gould pointed it out asking why the refs think it is their job to go out of their way to remind the Drags they need to get to the kick.

WHY? Is that Matt Cooper or Mark Gasnier running around out there giving Merge instructions on what is happening in the game?? No, it's Matt f**king Cecchin. And it wasn't just this game either, it's basically every game. How about you shut the f**k up, stop trying to do a job that isn't yours and instead focus on the one job you are responsible for that you happen to suck monkey cock at doing. You're referees, not f**king assistant coaches.

My pet hate is when they tell a player they are offside, just penalise them if they get involved.

IBM is a goose (who apparently has a penchant for monkey cock) but he does have a point here.

Somewhere the refs moved away from adjudicating to managing. It hasn't worked, it's made them susceptible to manipulation and has made the rules turn grey rather than black and white.

My biggest bug bear about refs and players is how after every incident no matter how minor players are whinging to the ref about what happened to them in the tackle or that they were obstructed when they actually made a poor defensive decision etc.

Time for the refs to move away from beung good guys and back to being rule adjudicators.

They should say 5th tackle once and only repeat if there is a chance of it being a repeat set. Say like a contest for a kick or a rebound off a defender. This is just to make sure they know it isn't 6 again. The reason they repeat is they don't want anyone to complain that they didn't hear the call. I don't think that is a reason to keep saying it. But at the end of the day this does not affect the game so why is it such as issue?

The second point about calling players offside. This is a good thing. Does anybody want penalties every set of 6? Sure penalise them if they get involved but calling them out is enough. Sometimes they go a little too far and they should blow the penalty when they don't.

referees can't just be adjudicators of the rules in this day & age
maybe in the old days when there was no mikes you could get away with not communicating other then with the whistle , but this is the modern world & its a different place

imagine not uttering any words , or very few
the ref penalises for a ruck interpretation , the captain asks why
the ref says nothing , refuses to.... communicate .. or manage the situation
how would that go down in the modern game ?
you'd have 10K fines being handed out almost every game , every week

the moment you begin engaging captains about your decisions , you start to become less of an adjudicator & more of a manager on field & with almost all players in the modern game being gen y... they all need to know
Y ?

Game managment by referees is here to stay , they're reflecting the world we live in nothing more

You make a fair point mate however once the refs have told players to get back the 10 2 or 3 times, don't turn a blind eye when they don't.

i think the point of a penalty....being penalised 30m of territory after the kick and fresh defensive set of 6.....is to deter that sort of play. do you think players will stay offside if they're going to get pinged for it? are the 10 warnings that players are getting at the mo deterring it? likewise with playing the ball and all other infringements against the rules of the game that seem to be overlooked now.

the current officiating is frustrating rusted on fans and ruining rugby league.....letting things slide, then out of nowhere, penalising an infringement that looked no different to the other multiple infringements that were overlooked after giving double digit warnings.

continuous game flow is a crock. the game has to be officiated to the rules. refs aren't on the field to manage, they're there to make sure the game is played to the prescribed rules. the game stops every f**kin try anyway so the bunker can f**k it up and KFC get their sponsorship value. it's all a mess
