Wests Tigers can have Leichhardt Oval for a steal if they commit to playing there

Adrian Proszenko and Daniel Lane
Published: March 28, 2015 - 9:23PM

Wests Tigers have the opportunity to play at Leichhardt Oval at practically no cost if they are prepared to provide a long-term commitment to the venue.

The future of Leichhardt Oval is uncertain beyond this season after cash constraints forced Balmain to forfeit their lease of the ground. The joint-venture club is yet to agree to council's new lease, raising uncertainty over games beyond those scheduled at the historic ground against Canberra on April 19 and the Titans on June 5.

Leichhardt councillor Darcy Byrne said the Tigers could secure a permanent home for the club if they were in for the long haul.

"Council has voted unanimously that the new arrangement should involve Wests Tigers playing a minimum of four games a year there with unfettered access for training and lower grades too," Byrne said.

"I will be formally proposing at Council that Wests Tigers be offered a 10-year agreement to play at Leichhardt Oval, with very limited or no hiring fee at all.

"With improved management of the ground, including maximising revenue from catering and additional events, there is no reason Wests Tigers cannot commit to making a permanent home base at Leichhardt.

"It is also impossible to attract and justify government investment in Leichhardt Oval while Wests Tiger prevaricate over their future there.

"Wests Tigers fans want to see a minimum of four games a year at Leichhardt and Campbelltown and it is time for [Tigers chief executive officer] Grant Mayer and the Wests Tigers board to give the fans what they want."

Wests Tigers are tentatively scheduled to host Penrith at Leichhardt Oval on June 28, but the latest developments mean there is no guarantee the fixture won't be shifted. The marquee clash may be of interest to ANZ Stadium, one of the club's other home grounds.

Wayne Pearce, who, as a child, lived a torpedo pass away from the ground where he become a Balmain Tigers legend, said it would be disappointing if rugby league was no longer played there.

"Leichhardt is such a wonderful suburban venue with a unique atmosphere," said Pearce. "From my experience, it's a great place to go to watch rugby league, especially with a full house and they've been getting full houses there in recent years.

"People like the Leichhardt Oval experience because it has genuine atmosphere."

I might just ask tho , who foots the bill for state cup games ? I cant see why they couldnt play WT state cup games on the same day as NRL an eliminate at least 4 extra payments.

ANZ refuse to allow 3 games on one day for club fixtures.

It is a maintenance concern.

Also it is impossible for FNF & MNF

Wests Tigers commit to two games at Leichhardt Oval but future still in doubt

Michael Carayannis
Published: April 7, 2015 - 8:00PM

The Wests Tigers have committed to play two games at Leichhardt Oval this year but their future at the ground beyond that remains undecided.

The Tigers' long-term use of the ground has been uncertain since Balmain's financial woes meant they were unable to afford to lease at Leichhardt Oval from April 1. Leichhardt council has since taken control of the ground. Tigers management held discussions with the council on March 31 but have yet to commit to playing the four games that were originally allocated to the ground this season.

The Tigers will definitely return to the venue for their clash with Canberra on April 19 and their round-13 game against the Titans. The club's board will meet on April 30 to decide if they will play Penrith and Melbourne at the ground or switch venues.

The sticking point has been the terms of the lease with the Tigers not wanting to keep the same arrangement they had with Balmain for the use of the ground. Tigers boss Grant Mayer said discussions with the council had been positive.

"We are really pleased with how council have addressed our concerns and I think we are on track to negotiating similar terms to previous seasons," Mayer said. "The board will discuss the council proposal at the end of April."

Balmain were unable to afford the $250,000 needed to maintain control of the venue. It costs the Wests Tigers almost $70,000 to play a game at Leichhardt Oval while they are paid about $100,000 per game to take matches to ANZ Stadium. Leichhardt council will take hold of the lease until October, costing them $300,000. They hope to hand the lease back to a financially viable Balmain.

The Tigers have already committed to four home games at Campbelltown Stadium as well as four at Sydney Olympic Park this season.

Meanwhile, Tigers forwards Aaron Woods and Jack Buchanan will escape bans with early guilty pleas despite being charged by the NRL's match review committee following the club's 22-6 win against Parramatta on Monday. Buchanan was hit with a grade one dangerous throw charge for a tackle on Tim Mannah. The charge carries 93 carry-over points, but if he fights the charge and loses he will miss one game.

The in-form Woods will not miss a game even if he fights his grade one careless high tackle charge on Ryan Morgan.

The same Balmain they try to f**k every step of the way?

Suck shit to Leichhardt Council, left with a huge maintenance expense and no revenue from a lease, and no foreseeable future for Wests Tigers there. This is what happens when you f**k organisations over.

leichhardt coucil must be the only council in Australia that doesn't cater to developers needs over residents,on the other hand, talk about biting the hand that feeds it in regards to the club continuing to lease leichhardt oval from the council.

Land and Environment Court rejects latest plans to redevelop the former Balmain Leagues Club site
Kim Arlington
Published: September 28, 2016 - 3:57PM

The old Balmain Leagues Club is a notorious eyesore on one of the city's busiest roads - and it could stay that way for years as wrangling continues over the fate of the derelict site.

Its owner and would-be developer, Rozelle Village, wanted to build 12- and eight-storey residential towers on the Victoria Road site, plus shops and space for a new leagues club.

But the development application was refused on Wednesday by the Land and Environment Court, which ruled it did not meet the objectives of the local environment plan for the precinct.

As well as potentially worsening traffic on a congested arterial road, the proposal raised "doubts about the area to be provided for use by the Balmain Leagues Club to promote its long term viability", Commissioner Annelise Tuor said.

She also said the design "does not demonstrate that it will contribute to the vibrancy and prosperity of the Rozelle Commercial Centre".

It is the latest chapter in the long-running dispute about the scale of development at the prime inner-city site, which has become a vandalised ruin in the years since it was vacated by the Tigers.

The club was forced out amid plans by the then Labor government to build a metro station and in 2009 sold its headquarters for $1 to Rozelle Village, which took on its $23.5 million debt.

The club is keen to return to its traditional home but since 2010 the NSW government has refused four proposals to redevelop the site. The application knocked back on Wednesday included plans for 135 apartments, a supermarket, public plaza and club premises.

Tigers chairman Leslie Glen said the court decision was disappointing "for our very long-suffering members and people who rely on our club for social and sporting amenity".

Without a stable home base the club was battling to survive financially and to continue its support for the community and local sporting organisations, Dr Glen said.

"It's just been frustration after frustration," he said. "The best thing for our club would be for the development to be approved and have us return to the site."

The old club building had "fallen into a terrible state", he added. "It's a blight on the community, but it seems that there isn't a will to get something that will satisfy everybody's wishes."

The member for Balmain, Jamie Parker, said it was disappointing that the court's decision meant a further delay to the return of the Balmain Leagues Club, but it "marks a significant win for the community".

"This decision should send a strong message to the developer that Rozelle doesn't need skyscrapers but needs sensible development," he said.

The former mayor of Leichhardt, Darcy Byrne, said Leichhardt Council had in 2015 unanimously approved a redevelopment of six and eight storey buildings on the site, including rent-free space for the club.

"The only way for the development to proceed on the site is for Rozelle Village to give up on their grandiose plans and make use of the existing council approval," Mr Byrne said. "Having repeatedly failed to build on this site and deliver the new leagues club which members were promised, I call on Rozelle Village to accept reality or sell the site so progress can be made."

Rozelle Village's Ian Wright said the Leichhardt local environment plan for the site "was gazetted back in 2008 [and] is not relevant to today's conditions". He said it needed a review, especially given Sydney's growing demand for residential space and with the WestConnex motorway set to change traffic flows.

"I think building something that's six to eight storeys would be a big missed opportunity for this site," he said. "It's unique in the inner west. It's on a ridge, it's on a main transport thoroughfare, so it does lend itself to higher density."

Mr Wright said he would assess what the new Inner West Council - formed through the merger of Leichhardt, Ashfield and Marrickville councils - planned for the site. But he said that by the time another development was applied for, approved and constructed, it could be five or six years before the leagues club returned to its Victoria Road home.

Interim General Manager of the Inner West Council, Rik Hart, said the club still owed $11 million to the site's owner and that council had tendered court documents raising concerns about the Tigers' ability to lease premises at the redeveloped site given its financial position.

"Council fought for the Tigers to be offered a home at an affordable rent, however the developer insisted on holding them to a commercial lease with a lower floor space than was permitted by the planning controls," he said. "The developer has constantly attempted to make council responsible for the future of the leagues club. However, when it came down to it, they did not provide the required security for the club."

Because that size will not meet budgeted profit plans i guess.
But anyway what the f**k ... these green merkins want every reffo under the sun to come to Australia but when their shitty little village atmosphere around Balmain needs to change a bit like the rest of Sydney to house the extra population they fight tooth and nail.to.stop.it. .. f**king hypocritical pricks.
