Thankfully, racism is a relatively rare thing within Rugby League. Our game can be proud at the way it has embraced people from all ethnic backgrounds. Apparently, the first ever black Rugby League player was also the first ever American to play the game. LUCIUS BANKS was born in Arlington, Mass, in 1899 and was a graduate from the famous West Point Military Academy. He went on to play TGG for Hunslet in 1923. How he came to do that is still a mystery, but he is probably the first black player to play the game.
