Channel Nine not keen on going live for Melbourne Storm's upcoming blockbusters

Russell Gould
From: Herald Sun
August 08, 2011 12:00AM

THE new love for rugby shown by Channel 9 is unlikely to extend to Melbourne Storm, with its two upcoming Friday night blockbusters set to be relegated to the graveyard shift.

Nine, the new rights holders for international rugby, used digital channel GEM to broadcast Saturday's Bledisloe Cup clash between the Wallabies and All Blacks from Auckland live in to Melbourne at 5.30pm.

It's the first time a TV signal was split between channels with the network broadcasting the Test on its main channels in Sydney and Brisbane then on Gem around the rest of Australia.

Special permission was required from Communications Minister Stephen Conroy to show the game live in Melbourne with the new anti-siphoning laws yet to be tabled in Federal Parliament.

But executives from Channel 9 won't be making a similar request to show Storm's Round 24 and Round 25 blockbusters against St George Illawarra, at home, then Manly away - both on Friday nights - live anywhere other than Sydney.

Instead they look set to be shown at 11.30pm or later in Melbourne, with the Wallabies match regarded as a one-off because of their national significance.

Programmers don't want to run NRL games up against AFL Friday night footy, and not on Gem, which is a channel loaded with content aimed at women over 40.

I'm sure the Storm would rate better than the 10k the Wallabies managed in Melbourne.

Nine/Gyngell are arrogant and they must be shown the door at the next broadcast deal.

This Gyngell clown just expects the rights every time.

The Storm should be on Gem. It's a disgrace.

9 know it will rate and so don't show it so it won't increase the next rights price

Been in the comp for 13 years, dominated it for about half as much and still can't get live games in Melbourne. f**king pathetic from 9 as usual.

Bombard the wide world of sports Facebook page guys! It seemed to work for the union tests!

They can't even cite sh*t ratings because the last game they showed did alright. Any decent sporting organization would be standing up to them and trying to do something about this.

This type of thing could have an impact on the next tv deal and that is why 9 is acting this way. The NRL should be trying to show its potential for ratings in Melbourne and this is as good a chance as any.

What a bunch of Karmichaels.

Bend over backwards for Union and screw League AGAIN after it's carried them in the ratings all these years.

But it's the NRL's fault as well for being so weak in this area.

It's issues such as these that make Gallop a failure in the job I do believe.

A strong leader would have sorted this out a long while ago.

In fact a decent leader would have included certain clauses in the last TV contract.

As much as Nine suck, they have been allowed to get away with it.

They could show it on Go! if they dont want to use Gem or 9. Or, let Foxtel show it live.

Rugby League in Melbourne rates better than AFL in Sydney. That is an undisputed fact. Channel 9 can go f**k themselves.

I'm banned from their WWOS page now because I state obvious facts.

Channel 9's excuse for not showing live Storm home games: "It affects the crowds."

Manly vs Storm is an away game on a Friday night and a Top 2 clash:

HOW THE HELL IS THAT GOING TO AFFECT MELBOURNE CROWDS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I hope you people who have access to WWOS bombard them on both the Channel 9 & WWOS pages and on twitter.
