Gabriel Batistuta vs Alan Shearer

This one has always stumped me. Cannot separate them. Around at the same time, both similar type finishers, powerful, accurate, volleys and strikes from distance. Both consistent from the start of their career to the end. Batigol has better international stats (54 goals in 77 games compared to 30 in 63), possibly helped by playing with better players with Argentina. Shearer has more goals at club level (283 vs 245 though he played 130 games more, plus Premier League was easier to score than Serie A). Just writing these numbers I’m probably edging towards Batistuta, but it’s very close.

Who edges it? Plus add your own close contest.

Statistics from the same league is a better indicator but when players haven't played in that environment it's got be the league difficulty. First grade player compared to second grade player.

On the data you provided Batitusta looks like he has an edge. However, one must look at the roles the players performed for their teams. Example, France's Oliver Giroud at club level is the focus of attacks but at this year's World Cup he performed a supportive role to help the team fix balance issues.

Both players are classed as Fox In The Boxes with Shearer having a Fighting Spirit card says he has more work rate and is more tradesman like compared to Batitusta who has a few tricks and can improvise more. If you want dependability then Shearer, if you want improvisation then Batitusta. Shearer requires less defense cover behind him, Batitusta requires more defense cover behind him in case he loses his battle because it's a higher risk/reward game improvising.
