Complaint of racial abuse in Roosters v Broncos

So many cucks can’t comprehend a POC might not be a little bitch. Problem is, I’ve actually spent a lifetime being racially vilified, so I know context
matters.

For example there’s a big difference between a white guy saying “that black c***t” and a POC saying “that black c***t*. Same words, difference context.

There are some genuinely very sheltered people out there that don't know much outside the small bubble they choose to live in. I tend to believe the Adam Goodes part but Im struggling to believe that he did not know that the "monkey" word is a racist term. Evern if we are to believe him in that he didn't know, today's punishment is an important part in "bursting" his bubble and learning a few hard truths.

I don't think Mundine is alone in his views about dark on dark being ok.

Good. 'I want to see Ezra in Brisbane' is the headline on nrl.com, like anyone gives a f**k what Spencer wants. You call someone a monkey, you lose the right to call the shots on what happens. Mam said f**k off last week, and fair enough.

I wish clubs would grow a pair and accept 100% responsibility. The Roosters saying Leniu didn't mean to put down Ezra in a racial-based way, is such blame-absolving BS and insulting to anyone with any common sense. Zero chance he calls a white player a monkey. Then they say he put his hand up and wanted to own this immediately - no he didn't, he said it was fun and games and banter, and that he wanted to square up with Mam after the game. Not to apologise.

I don't think this is an isolated case, you only need to listen to gangsta rap to hear all sorts of terms used.

African Americans depowering (or trying to) a term by using it themselves doesn't mean all terms are ok.

It's also not a case of both players being indigenous Australians. Leniu is Samoan. So it's not comparable. It's a dumb take wherever it's made tbh

It took a 6.30am message for Spencer Leniu to realise he’d used a racial slur

Roosters prop Spencer Leniu insists he only knew at 6.30am the day after being accused of calling Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam a “monkey” that the term was racist.
“An older Aboriginal lady had sent me a message with a definition of what the word means,” he told the NRL judiciary on Monday night. “That’s when I realised.”
This is the moment when you either believe Leniu — or call bullshit.
When you accept that he’s truly remorseful for using the word in the season-opener in Las Vegas — or he just wants to get back on the field as soon as possible.

When you hope the game can learn from this sorry episode — or it’s best to just shame the 23-year-old into oblivion.
Leniu’s fate wasn’t decided by the public, nor the media, nor the Indigenous players past and present who wanted the proverbial book thrown at him. To set an example. To draw a line in the sand.

It was decided by the judiciary panel of chairman Geoff Bellew, former referee Sean Hampstead and retired international Bob Lindner. After 40 minutes of deliberation, they handed Leniu an eight-match suspension, finding he had “intended the remark as a racist comment” and that a heavy penalty was needed as a “clear deterrent” against racism.

After Bellew explained the panel’s unanimous verdict, Leniu shook everyone’s hands and smiled, even though they had, in essence, also called bullshit. For some, two months on the sidelines won’t be long enough.

They wanted Leniu’s house, car, superannuation and part of his soul and fair enough, too, because this incident has hurt people in different ways.
But as you watched Leniu humbly and candidly give his version of events on this night, in front of a room of lawyers, officials, his coach Trent Robinson and a dozen reporters, his remorse rung true — even if that conflicts with the panel’s decision.

Racism scandals are never pretty. They are all uniquely ugly and sad in their own way. But rugby league started drawing a line on this type of vilification long ago, and you only had to peer over your shoulder during the hearing for a reminder of how far the code has come. In the back-row of the hearing sat Dean Widders, who has worked for many years at the NRL as an Indigenous player wellbeing and education manager. In another life, in 2005, South Sydney captain Bryan Fletcher called him “black c---” while Widders was playing for Parramatta. Fletcher’s punishment? A $10,000 fine and he lost the captaincy.
It took great courage for Indigenous players to call out racism then, as it does now, but the manner in which Mam immediately made an on-field complaint that night, and the way his teammates, club and fellow Indigenous players have rallied around him, demonstrates a significant shift. The startling and raw testimony Leniu provided on Monday night showed how far there is to go.

The judiciary heard that, after tackling Broncos prop Payne Haas, Mam had said to his teammates, “Run it back at Spencer”. That Leniu’s first reaction was to say, “F--- up, you monkey” suggests it wasn’t a premeditated sledge, but a visceral response to a rival player on the blindside chirping at him.

In his subsequent post-match media interviews, in which he called the exchange as “fun and games”, and then an argument with Broncos players back at the hotel where the teams were staying, he still didn’t know how rank the term was.

The penny started to drop when he woke up and read the message from the Indigenous woman explaining how hurtful his words could be. NRL prosecutor Lachlan Giles argued this was a “convenient excuse”. He claimed it was impossible for anyone in this country to not understand the racial implications of the term “monkey”, citing cricket’s 2008 Monkeygate scandal involving Andrew Symonds and other incidents.
“Have you not heard of Adam Goodes?” Giles asked, referencing the terrible events of 2013 when the Sydney Swans star was called an “ape” by a young Collingwood supporter at the SCG.
“No,” Leniu said.
For mine, this strikes at the heart of the argument beyond the spin and leaked stories of the past week; whether he knew the term was racist or not.
When Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh allegedly called Symonds a “monkey”, Leniu hadn’t even moved to Australia yet. He was eight years old.

When Goodes was racially vilified, he was living in Mount Druitt, immersed in rugby league. He was 13 years old.
His learned experience is different to others, to you and me, and to dismiss him when he says he genuinely didn’t know that the term “monkey” was wrong is naïve. You don’t know what you don’t know.
Leniu also gave a troubling insight into how players of colour in football teams speak to one another. He revealed that terms like “black c---“, “blackie”, “coconut” and “monkey” was “common language” in some environments.

If that’s the case, the events of the past week will surely give every club reason to pause and consider the language that is used. We all should.

It's 2024.

"Gangsta" Rap hasn't been a popular genre for 35 years.

Words being appropriated, isn't some license for it to be used by all.

Where did I say it was?

Leinu admitted to being called similar things but shrugged them off. I am sure there are others in that boat. Does it make their stance wrong?

I am sure Luai cops some horrible shit particularly on Insta.

That is the thing with something like this, Not everyone reacts the same. Maybe the game needs to bring in a no taunting rule or something to stop similar things

Indeed.

In fact, I would argue that automatically calling rap "Gangsta" because it's a black person rapping is in itself extremely racist.

Google 1four you f**kwit.

They are litterally a gang, That are samoan who rap and as such have been banned from doing shows.

The Penrith islanders love their music and know them 1st hand

Yes. Seen it and been on the end of similar shit it myself.

Different people, different perceptions, different reactions.

People who've never experienced it will try pigeonhole it into a nice neat compartment and then expect/hope everyone to abide the same way. Not gonna happen.
