DISAPPOINTMENT FOR COURAGEOUS RICHARD JOYCE!

British Cross-Country:
Leeds Championships 2002 - U19's Boys Race:
Richard Joyce finished 4th.
(Abbey Grange C of E High School &SixthForm)
At Garforth, Leeds, England
Att: 100 (estimated)

Richard Joyce ran his first Cross-Country raceon Saturday morning which resulted in mixed emotions for the young fellow.

Richard, 17, ran in the under 19's age which was the last race to be contested at 11:30am.

Ten youngsters were originally sopposed to run the race although only four contested, one of them Richard and three others.

RJ' was up against it right from the start as he was forced to practically sprint the first lap of the course due to the experience and pace of the other runners. By the start of the second lap of the course RJ was metres behind and it needed a tremendous effort to catch up to the others. But the little fellow simply didn't have it in him and fell further behind after a small comeback. By the third and final lap, RJ was about three quarters of a lap behind but the crowd spured him on to finish the race.

Above, Richard Joyce's race number was 243.

Richard may have finishedlast(4th out of 4 competitors), but he did himself proud completing a very hard course (one of the toughest throughout Yorkshire) against three other competitors who run for Leeds and other running clubs. For a debut, it was a good performance, stepping up from a bit of training on Beckett Park to a full blown high quality Leeds Championships.

Coaches Mr Kilkenny and Mrs Pearcewere a great help to all of the competitors from Abbey Grange who overall produced some top class performances.

Good show RJ. It sounds like you need a longer period of training to build a better aerobic base. Maybe pepe's program will help, but in any case, stick with it and you will improve.

I recommend dripping, haggis and a few warm pints. That should definitely do the trick.

Thanks guys. It was tough work out there, I mean I didn'r really know who I was up against and after the race it turned out they ran for Leeds and were GB trialists. But atleast I finished the race, some would hav ejust given up. I practically had to sprint to start off with, they were really super fit.

Yep, good idea Pepe, a bit of program may do the trick. If I run again I'll amke sure I'm up to full scratch. The Steve Bradbury tactics are legendary now. I must say though, quite a lot of people slipped in the deep mud and even collapsed due to pressurising themselves so hard during the races.

Legend, maybe your right, dripping would do me fine.
Maybe I might take some Steroids for my build up next time, or maybe some Nandrolone, nah only messing, the traditional Bananas, chocolate, anysugar related drink or foodand mineral water will do me.

I swear down though man, they must hav ebeen on summa to be that fit.

Dock leaves grow all over the UK, but only in the upper Calder Valley are they boiled with onions and eaten, usually with Black Pud and or bacon. Don't know why it's called a pudding though.

Yeah, maybe Black Pudding might just do the trick.

The BEEB, I wouldn't want to be broadcasted on there ever, if I did, I'll tell ya, I'd be mentioning Rugby League as much as posible. If they asked me questions after a race, I would straight tell the whole nation on national TV that I'm off to watch the Rhinos' in the Challenge Cup.

But that would never happen.

British Cross-Country Running:

Richard Joyce (who ran for Abbey Grange C of E High School on Saturday) this evening had a press-conference on the aftermath of his defeat at the Leeds Championships 2002 on March 16th in Garforth.

The QSA (Queenswood Sporst Association which was founded by Richard in the summer of 2000) interviewed Richard Joyce at the Head Quarters sponsored by RJ Sports Empires Limited. The news conference was short but sweet. Below are the questions and statements by both sets of parties.

QSA: "Richard, how do you feel after the defeat on Saturday?"

"Well as you would expect I was a bit disappointed in the way I lost, losing by about three quarters of a lap I think in the end." Joyce replied.

QSA: "why do you think you found it hard to keep up with the other runners?, why did you fall behind so early in the race?"

"I think it was the way I started the race you know. I tried to keep up with the other runners not expecting how fast they would start off. I expected them to start the race a bit slower than that but they were practically sprinting the race. I was a bit shocked at the pace they were running at to start off with and I trained myself to start of a more consistant pace then speed up on the last lap or so. I guess I wasn't prepared for such a fast start and I tried to keep with them for a while in teh first lap but it was no hope. The thick mud was hard work too." Joyce said.

Above, Richard Joyce during a press-conference at the Queenswood Sports Association Head Quarters on Monday evening.

QSA: "Can you just take us through the race please?"

Richard said: "Yeah sure. Well, you, you know how it all started as I have just mentioned a few moments ago so I'll start on the second lap of the course."

"Well, at the start of the second lap I was about a quarter of the lap behind and after using up a great deal of energy to start off with I was running at a pretty slow pace, and at one point, just one point for a moment I, I was thinking of even quiting, I thought I had no hope to win, or even catch up but I could hear the crowd at the top of the hill cheering me on, so that changed my mind."

QSA: "Why did that change your mind?"

"Well first of all it indicated that they all wanted me to finish the race and it really just spured me on to go and finish the race."

"I wanted to finish it for not only me but for my team-mates too who had tried so hard in their races." It was a superb race from then on despite finishing last." Why? well beacuse it was such a great atmosphere and the fans up on the hill were cheering me on to win and it helped me get through the rest of the race and I managed to finish it." Joyce said.

"Ok, I know I fourth, basically last but I could have easily dropped out and quit but nope, I carried on, I wanted to finish it, I was determined to. I think I could have done a lot better if I knew who I was up against and if I had used better tactics but that's the way of the world and it's more exciting having to guess who you are up against and how you will have to run the race." RJ' explained.

QSA: "What was you feeling during the race?, not mentally but physically?"

"Well like I said, I tired myself out pretty early, on the first part of the course but after the first lap of the course just starting the second lap after I got past the crowd I had being pacing myself out a bit and running at a very similar pace which seemed to give me extra energy."

"My legs were fine, absolutely fine, they weren't wobbly or anything, tehy felt great and they could have lasted forever, that's how I felt anyway but it was my lungs, everytime I pushed my legs a bit faster my lungs just couldn't take it, they were too small maybe, probably, that's the disadvantage of being small but realistically I was out of the race at that point, it was all about finishing the race for me really"

"I think if I had another crack I would start on my own pace and then once I think I have got through any chance of stiches etc, I would start to sprint. I mean it was my first ever Cross-Country race and it was a good enjoyable experience and was a pleasure to compete in, I thoroughly enjoyed myself." Said R.Joyce.

"I know it sounds mad but I didn't really feel that tired, physically, I did but I didn't if you know what I mean? My body felt great, it was my lungs really."

QSA: "Overall, did you enjoy the race and the experience?"

"Yeah the Championships were a great experience to be involvedin. I mean it's all about competing and not winning as I'm sure most sportsmen and women would agree, including the rest of the Abbey Grange team but it is nice to do well or even win, who wouldn't want to win?" Richard replied.

"But year, it wasa great morning out as I'm sure the other runners would agree on."

QSA: "Would you run again for your Sixth Form/School Abbey Grange if asked, in any running competition? Cross-Country or Athletics Track and Field?"

"Erm...erm..erm yeah I soppose I would, it just depends really...yeah I think I probably would. But I'd make sure I train a little better and be more and better pepared if their, and that's a big if, if there is a next erm..time." Joyce said.

Maybe RJ will be on the BBC as a sports reporter some day rather than as a runner.

Hey Canadian Steve....about a year or two ago...I wanted to become a sports editor or a sports reporter...or even a website manager making money through websites...but my interests have dramatically changed over the past half a year....they really have...it's amazing how things can change over a period of time.....

When I was a little youngster...about between 8 and 14 I was heavily involved in sport..Ireally wanted to be a professional sportsman...and I was good at certain sports...especially Running (Athletics) and Football...even Rugby League as a younger lad....but as I got older I realised I blew my chances of doing anything in physical sport...particularly in running (Athletics and Country Running)...I really blew my chances in that sport....

But then I became interested in Rugby League all of a sudden...when I was about 15 or 16...I ended up creatinga website....and it took off from there...at this point...my goal in life was actually to eventually work at the Rugby League RFL Head Quarters involved in the sport (and get married..lol) but when I discovered....

the world of I.T and website building..I really became interested in this and even did a week's work experience when I was 16 at William Hill Internet Department helping them with updating their websites....But that soon became a bore to me....websites....

The Church scene also took me along at one point...I was quite involved with a church group...a youth group etc etc....it was all good fun..it showed me what life is all about..but I decided not to get too deep into all taht...it could halt ur lifetime ambitions at times....due to certain Christian views..although it was probably a revolution in my life at that time without a doubt..I was very shy within that world mind..GOD,,...good stuff!!!....

Back to the ambitions part... - - - When I turned 17...it changed slightly....I wanted to be a sports reporter or an editor..very badly..........I was soooooo interested in sport..I began to play new sports and attempt to rediscover my love for playing sports.....soon ended after that Leeds Championships race...that was really my only opportunity of doing anything relatively big in sport..although on a small local scale though...

But once I turned 18...clubbing..night clubbing and socialising took over...I am now a true night clubber within Leeds...I have been to just about every night club or bar slash (/ - lol) night club within Leeds....I enjoy the popularity which you receive when you are out ona night out....it's kool :)... :)...

But now I have looked back on what clubbing has helped me to achieve..obviously on paper...nothing but it helps you enjoy life../.lol...nah but those clubbing days may be over soon..I'll still club..but not as often...as I am now prepared to calm down and fully concentrate on my Travel and Tourism course where I am set on achieving two A-Levels graded B...

If this continues...my good progress...it looks as if I will be doing something within the Tourism industry....

As you can see..my aims...interests...goals/ambitions...and...feelings have changed very dramatically over the last few years...

I'm mad..lol.....I've had several chance's to break into different industries and do maybe big things in different subjects and industries etc etc...but I've back out....is Tourism my fait?????Who knows?????Probably only GOD n Jesus but there you go...lol...fairplay to them both hey..like Father like son./..

lol....ur all probably thinking - what the.....lol..mini biography...lolness!!!

But don't you think it is interesting how things happen and turn out???I certainly do....but RJ's journey through life is far from over yet..I wanna get involved in everything.

Yo....I wanna hear what your ambitions have been and are...whether you just still really young or an old guy....I wanna hear how things have changed????if your up for letting personal experiences and feelings be let online????hey????

Good to see you posting again, RJ, here and on your own site. That's normal, I think, for you to go through all those changes and interests. I would just say you should have some balance in what you do - don'tgo in for too much clubbing; stay with your interests in sport and writing about sport. I personally also hope you get back to your interest in the church and God. I'll talk to you more on your forum sometime.
