No offence to the Eels, but I doubt that Ryles will be coming. Every impression he gives off is he's waiting to for Bellamy to leave the Storm. Yes he may have to wait till 2026 before that happens, but he's young enough and probably in the box seat to take over when Bellamy decides to up stumps. He knows their systems, and the players and officials all know him.

How long does he want to wait.

Bellamy has said for about 8 years he is thinking about retiring but keeps going.

Its clearly a tactic to milk more $$$ of Melbourne.

We have made 3 grand finals in 2 and a half decades. Must be pretty well resourced.
If the comp was even you'd expect to make that many grand finals in that time. There's fifty grand finalists in 25 years, and 1/16 of 50 is about three.
Only a handful of clubs have made more in that time.
It's true, but clubs grow stronger and weaker, and ten years can tell you more about a club's current resourcing than the fifteen years before that. In the past ten years we've seen twenty grand finalists and they are distributed like this:

ClubGrand finals ('14-'23)
Panthers4
Storm4
Broncos2
Cowboys2
Rabbitohs2
Roosters2
Bulldogs1
Eels1
Raiders1
Sharks1

There's also a bunch of clubs on zero. In ten years, in a sixteen/seventeen team comp you'd expect to make at least one grand final, if the competition was even. Zero could mean underperformance or bad luck, but appearing in one over those ten years could also just mean good luck. Two grand finals in ten years is starting to look like a high performing club, and four is absolute dominance. We're doing okay (or just lucky). But there are much bigger clubs out there, and the two biggest account for three quarters of our finals losses in the last decade. The other two losses were to the Cowboys and Souths, who are also outperforming the NRL average over the past decade.

If Ryles and his family are comfortable in Melbourne and he is earning enough and he trusts he is next in line for the Storm job, then why would he leave?

Hed do a Ricky mate. As soon as The Storm job was available hed run back to Mummy.
Would you want the gig seriously its like replacing Don Bradman whoever the next coach of Melbourne is.

Your on a hiding to nothing as basically anything but a top 4 spot is a failure. The expectations that Bellamy has set is nearly impossible to replicate.

Has there ever been a coach/manager successful after taking over from someone who has had so much success over a long period time like Bellamy.

One of the biggest sporting clubs in Manchester United proved after Sir Alex Ferguson that it was even impossible for them.

Brisbane couldnt replace Wayne Bennett after 20 years - Ivan Henjak lasted 2 years despite making a prelim final in his debut season.

Timeline fits tbh.

I reckon the board gave a deliberate leak to SMH about passing on Bennett from a third party at that board meeting as a deliberate throw away to get media off the scent.

So they could quietly pursue Bennett in the background.

It makes more sense now then it did 3 weeks ago.

Unfortunately i think they were too late & should have been done way earlier before Souths got involved but is what it is.
I suspect JD got the punt at the time purely because they knew we weren't going to be far behind.

Slater may have something to say about that

No one has mentioned Ryan Carr.

His experience as caretaker last year would have been invaluable. Just dealing with the media and getting a better understanding of handling the actual HC on a full-time basis for 3 or 4 months.

Maybe he is too close to our current group. And we need a complete fresh voice.

Carr wouldn't be my choice but just surprised he has barely got a mention yet.

6.50 min mark, coaching option questions….Jim goes “we’re in …” then quickly changes to “what we are looking…”

could have been an accident,….but think it suggests they may have already identified who they want….and in discussions with them…and had to quickly change his answer…

Would be surprised if after what has happened, they don’t already have a short list …..
There has been a shortlist since mid-2022.
