Fiji NSW Cup Bid

Completely agree. The Aus gov spends $550 mil a year in aid to png. Aus gov could give the Nrl $100mil of that. With the influence and social programs Rugby league has in these countries it would have more effect. Why couldn’t jt, slater, Smith, Hayne, Civoniceva etc help convince gov officials of this funding?

IT wouldn't even need to be a cynical cash grab by the ARLC either.

They could legitimately get in bed with Aid, pump $$$ in to the local game and cross sell with their NRL Reads programs amongst others.

Win win all round.

ARLC just needs to use PNG and Fiji as legit Foreign Aid projects and get them bankrolled that way.

FMD. If the AFL can get tax dollars for Foreign Aid projects, I can't see why RL can't with legitimate and tangible and real results.
I like your thinking but the boneheads running the game aren’t that forward thinking.

From memory most of the money nrl spends in png is from a Govt fund for overseas development.

Absolutely, with how corrupt png and other pacific islands are, having a Aus company (Nrl) that provides assistance and funding to these countries through rugby league by also maintaining kpi is the way to go. It could be the template for all Australasian countries that get funding from Australia.

I thought that was the case as well. But the money we are talking about is a pittance compared to what the Nrl could achieve. I guess you need a foot in the door before you ramp it up.

In the current png climate there are refugees scared to go out in png. Worried about being bashed or robbed. On the back of a successful png team, If you have well respected, disciplined players sharing domestic violence/abuse issues, healthy eating, education programs. I can’t see why the Aus gov wouldn’t support it.

If the ARLC put together a proper business plan, in conjunction with Foreign Aid via the Aust Govt, there is absolutely no way they could knock it back.

True, it could happen but the ARLC probably don't care enough to make it happen. The Fiji and PNG respective bid teams did all the work and jumped through all of the hoops to get the attention of the QRL and NSWRL. It would probably have to come from a bid team representing each area and the bid team may have to put the plan together that you suggested. It would be great to see.

If it does happen we may as well absorb a few more NZ teams into the system and the NRL and associated leagues would just become the default domestic setup for all nations in the region. Each federation would then just run the amateur, schools and grass-roots programs in their own country.

Or.... have 3 teams from NZ and have Fiji, PNG, Samoa, Cook Islands and Tonga..
And form a 8 team Pacific Rugby League with each clun affiliated with 2 NRL clubs... just a thought.

I think the appeal for the Hunters and now Fiji (fans and players) is to play in an elite competition one level below the NRL. I'm not sure a pacific only comp would have the commercial clout, playing standards nor the level of interest that QRL / NSW RL generates.

Has the Fiji team been confirmed yet? Surely a Tongan and Samoa side, both based in South Auckland (with Samoa also playing in Apia) should be next for 2021. The Samoan Rugby Union is bankrupt. Now is the opportunity to smoke RU out of the Pacific Islands, or at least displace it with RL for their national sports.

Also, as already said, the national teams of Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, PNG, Cook Islands and NZ should all play each other when SoO is being played (Pacific Islands 6 Nations).

Petero Civoniceva and Fiji National Rugby League's dream to field a professional team in the New South Wales Rugby League's premier competition received a huge boost today following the Australian Government's announcement of landmark support for Rugby League in the Pacific.

Australian Prime Minister, the Hon. Scott Morrison, made the announcement in Suva, Fiji, this morning pledging financial support for the current bid by a team from Fiji to compete in the Intrust Super Premiership NSW in 2020; as well as supporting NRL pre-season trial matches in the Pacific, in February 2020, 2021 and 2022.

"I am happy to announce that we will be helping fund Fiji's pathway into the New South Wales Rugby League's Intrust Super Premiership," The Prime Minister said.

"It's been a dream of Petero's and many others to field a Fijian team in one of our most beloved competitions.

"I will be tuning in to watch ... especially when they play the Newtown Jets."

NSWRL General Manager of Football, Barrie-Jon Mather, said the decision was a great vote of confidence in the game's future in the Pacific and their hopes to play second tier Rugby League. .

"The announcement of support by the Australian Government substantially assists the bid team, led by Petero Civoniceva, and puts them a step closer to realising their dream of having a Fijian team play in our elite competition," Mather said.

Minister for Sport Bridget McKenzie said the announcement recognises the power of sport to bring people and communities together to build stronger ties.

"Rugby League is incredibly popular in the Pacific Islands and if we can translate that into greater grassroots participation, we know that it will lead to more active and healthier participants," Minister McKenzie said.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Marise Payne said sport has been a longstanding element of Australia's engagement in the Pacific.

"These announcements are part of the Australian Government's commitment to the Australia-Pacific Sports Linkages Program which will deliver $40 million in grants over five years to support the development of sport throughout the Pacific," Minister Payne said.

"Sport has been a longstanding element of our engagement in the Pacific. This new program recognises the role and reach of sport as a major connection between Pacific and Australian people and communities."

The NRL Head of Government and Community Relations, Mr Jaymes Boland-Rudder said today's announcement was a fantastic endorsement of the positive impact Rugby League has both on and off the field throughout the Pacific.

"We thank the Prime Minister, and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, for generously supporting and raising the profile of the lasting impact Rugby League is making for women, children and men throughout the Pacific," Boland-Rudder said.

"The NRL trial matches, alongside the assistance provided towards funding the proposed Fijian-based team in the NSWRL's Intrust Super Premiership, will have a profound impact in inspiring our proud and passionate Pacific neighbours and their communities."

So, still nothing official? Why can’t the NSWRL just make a decision.

That's not fair... They have made a decision multiple times.

Until now the Fiji bid has been unable to prove that they have enough funds to sustain themselves and the NSWRL has done the right thing and rejected their bid.

This could easily blow up in the NRL's face if they aren't careful.

Now there will undoubtedly be multiple bids from PI's that attempt to get similar assistance from the Australian government, which is great, but that assistance never lasts forever, and the last thing the NRL needs is a bunch of clubs from across the PI's on their books that are reliant on Aus gov funding to all suddenly lose that funding because of politics and then all fall over at once, cause when they fall over it'll reflect poorly on the NRL and the sport not the government...

The NRL shouldn't let the government pressure them into situations that aren't good for them, and definitely shouldn't accept any clubs with this sort of government funding that they don't think they can make sustainable independent of the government grants.

Don't get me wrong it's great that RL and the Pi's are seeing this funding, but it's a double edged sword and needs to be handled with care.
