A fire has destroyed the historic main grandstand at the home of French rugby league club Lezignan.

Local press reported that firefighters were called out to the Moulin Stadium at 6.30am on Sunday morning and forced some local houses to be evacuated.

The main wooden stands have been completed destroyed in the fire.

A video of the scene earlier today can be viewed here.

Mayor of Lezignan, Michel Maique, told L’Independant: “We are all very sad in Lézignan because all Lézignanais have a carnal link with this stadium. This stadium is part of the local heritage. It is an emblematic place.”

The ground was built back in 1919 and has a capacity of 6,000.

It hosted an international match between France and Scotland back in 2001.

Tragic news. It is (was) a beautiful little ground. It was well worth a visit if you got down that way... :disappointed:
