Agreed, it's a huge amount which is why it should be spent wisely and not wasted on white elephant stadium that no-one here has asked for, and who's legacy would've been primarily a single, second-tier sports franchise.

This will be a full knockdown/rebuild & a downsize afterwards, and includes transport links.
It will leave us (and Australia) with an actual, tangible legacy after the games are over.

RL fans on an a RL forum arguing about this, and the associated work on LP, is a little bit weird to me.

I don't think it will get anywhere near $1.6B to be honest.

Personally I don't give a f**k about athletics but would rather they benefit from the games than fumbleball... Petty? Yes. But I think it would be a crime if our biggest and best stadium in Brisbane was an oval.

Which is why the IOC doesn’t want a 3 billion dollar stadium spend. It needs to attract more bidders in the future and stadium cost like this can be a deterrent.

I know Sydney and Melbourne have this snobby, cultural cringe attitude towards Brisbane but the games will look good in south east QLD, the region is literally a giant outdoor playground. Brisbane will look fine too with its shimmering skyscrapers along the river, Queens wharf casino, Brisbane Live arena at Roma Street.
