Hello!

I have a friend from here that is travelling to Aus in October, and asked me if I know of any companies or people I would recommend to take him scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef.

I have never been there, so I told him I would ask around. Any ideas?

There are gazillions. Just tell her to get her arse to Airlie Beach or Cairns and/or Port Douglas.

There are heaps of charter groups and you can book from your motel room or reception.

If I had to pick 1 I'd say Cairns offers more than Airlie Beach (Whitsunday Islands).

I prefer Cairns over Airlie Beach. Way much more to do. Airlie beach township consists a a few pubs, restaurants and clothes shops with a ton of accommodation units as most people spend their time out on the Islands where it is very expensive.

Its starting to gather momentum as a back packers town so it now has a bit more low budget accommodation.

Cairns is a city, if you get sick it has a hospital other major infrastructure, and it has major shopping centres and the like, much more accommodating. Also has a Casino, much more to do there.

Post Douglas is more like Airlie Beach, pretty small compared to Cairns.

I like Cairns a lot, even with the shit-tonnes of backpackers in town. Townsville is boring.

I got my Open Water Diver's License with Deep Sea Divers Den and they were fantastic. They have overnight dives, good staff, and a pretty mean feed too.

Townsville is more of a tradie/military town that doesn't rely on tourists.

Which is lucky because this time of year the joint looks like Mt Isa by the sea it's so dry. Something to do with the way the coast is situated and the mountains and so forth, apparently doesn't lend itself to consistent rainfall all year round.

The one good thing about tvl (if you own a house here) is the house prices have held during the GFC and not gone backwards like Cairns and there is still a fairly high demand for houses to rent here as well.

The best analogy i can come up with is Cairns is like that hot chick you love to go home with every now and again and have a good time with and bang the living shit out of. She doesn't have much substance to her but who gives a shit when she looks that good. Other people will come in and have a crack and have just as good a time as you do but will rub your face in it and it will annoy the shit out of you in the process. Good luck trying to live with her because she's as unstable as a deck of cards in San Fransisco.

Townsville is more like the chick you are going to marry. Safe option, she will give you good times now and again just don't expect it everyday. Not the best looking chick either but has her own redeeming features. Does scrub up well (wet season). She will keep you busy constantly as there's plenty of odd jobs to do around the house.

Back to your question Alba, anywhere in NQ is fine to go to the reef from.
