Is there a way to backup emails in gmail?

Does anyone know? I've just realised I have a stack of personal corro in my gmail account that I would hate to lose.

Is there a way to back it up?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Um... I'm not sure about doing it from within gmail.

What I do is have an email program check my gmail account, downloading messages from the in box and saved folders. When I log in through gmail all that stuff is still there, so I guess that is a kind of back-up system?

Instructions for doing this are in gmail under heading "third party" something... There are also instructions within Thunderbird (email program) about how to do the settings for it to check your multiple email accounts. Hope this helps?
