Is There Anything Good About Melbourne?

The missus is having three job interviews today in Melbourne. These jobs would be around $200K pa, considerably more than she is getting in Central Queensland for the same position.

She was born and bred in Melbourne and wants to move back there.

I don't care...I'm retired so I'll just go with the flow.

One job is in the Melbourne CDB, another in Springvale and the third in Mornington.

What's the hype about Melbourne? I've been there once in the mid 80's doing consultancy work for GMH - stayed there for 6 hours. I found it to be nothing but a Sydney clone (I lived there for 20 odd years) and I'm used to walking down the street without having to argue with some tackhead with an attitude.

I don't care about restaurants, markets, casinos or pretty shops with nice shoes. I do care about breathtaking geography, beaches and natural features, not some f**king heritage listed moss covered sandstone crypt.

Does Melbourne have anything going for it?

No smart answers like "Piss the missus off". This is an honest question....the missus talks the place up like its a f**king goddamn heaven on earth!!

In that case, settle in Mornington. Its got beaches and a coastal drive to rival the great ocean road. Its a bit more laid back. I could live in Mornington, somewhere around Mt Eliza a short walk to the beach.
Springvale is multicultural with a large indo chinese population.
If you're a foodie and like cafes, parks, settle in the inner city eastern suburbs.
The Melbourne CBD is just too overcrowded sometimes. Not good if you want to get away from the rat race.

Its no comparison to central queensland. Melbourne is tops for variety.

I'd recommend Mornington as well based on your love of geography. Its over an hour out, close to two really, with beautiful views and cooling breezes in summer, although winter would be lousy given you spent time in central Queensland.

As well as the coast being close, the dandenong ranges and its beauty are close by as well.

As for the hype, its what Melbourne does most about itself, the desperation not to be good, but simply acknowledged as better than Sydney is endemic. I lived there for 6 years and it was a nice place to live, but if you ever met a Melbourne born and bred person, and they find put you've lived in Sydney it is inevitable and irresitable for them to ask not which you prefer, but why you prefer Melbourne and by how much. It reeks of insecurity in that regard, but it does become less prevalent as you get out of town, and the peninsula can do just that.

Since she's born and raised in Melbourne, apon returning there her attempts to indoctrinate you will begin. She won't be able to help it, its not a bad place to live though, just avoid muzby.

After living in Sydney for about 25 years, I spent the next 23 years on the shores of Jervis Bay, NSW. That's what I miss.

Next stop....Blunderberg....full of fat merkins and morons.

Mount Druitt would be better than the Rum City.

Honestly.

THE CHAMP is testimonial to that. Mr Spock is there as well but he's OK.

Plenty of scenery about and its all close being such a small state.

Grampians, Great Ocean Road, Gippsland, Ski fields etc.

Melbourne people are ok. Better than Sydney. Both are better than anything QLD has to offer.

It's not as AFL crazy as it used to be.

Put that down to other cultures and the fact that Soccer and NRL sides are fairly successful as well, which gives the non afl loving locals other sports to follow.

If you like scenery, then I'd also advise you to go to Mornington as it seems the best fit

To answer the header question about there being anything good
Well, yes. Bloody loads.
  • The Melbourne International Comedy Festival
  • The Australian Open
  • The transport system
  • The Yarra Valley
  • The Mornington Peninsula
  • The Great Ocean Road
  • Lots of other things starting with the word The
  • Great shopping (I know it's not your thing)
  • A more laid back population that Sydney, even if they spend too much time trying to convince Sydney people that Melbourne is better. We don't give a shit. Get over it. Once they do that, it's cool
  • A great beer / food culture. You might not like fancy restaurants, but everyone loves beer and pulled pork burgers. Go with it.
  • They even have a Rugby League team!
Melbourne offers a great range of choice, all within a closer proximity to town than Sydney. The Dandenong Ranges offer a genuine country style life within an hour of town for example. You can opt for wine country in the Yarra or Inner City chic such as St Kilda or Carlton or you can choose coastal country such as the Mornington Peninsula.

I love Sydney, don't get me wrong. But I don't love it to the exclusion of anywhere else. I loved Perth / Fremantle and Adelaide when I visited them, but for completely different reasons. Maybe I'm just easy pleased ;-)

The Great Ocean Road is something I want to see.

Being a lover of geography, I believe the 12 Apostles are there as well.

funny old town melbourne..

within the first 24 hours of my first visit down here, i had made the decision to move..

just enjoy the atmosphere, the people (football culture aside) and there is so much to do - basically whatever your thing, you can find people who are interested..

by the sounds of it, the mornington job would be the ideal one - it's still so close to country lifestyle but also only a freeway trip away from the city (all linked up now)..

just avoid muzby.

sage advice. i keep trying to avoid him but he always shows his face..

the great ocean road is pretty sweet.. the 12 (7 now) apostles are pretty awe inspiring too.. particularly from the ground, not the lookout..

Not my cup of tea personally... it's definitely one of my least liked cities in this country. Wouldn't leave Sydney if you set me up with a nice house down there and no mortgage!

The public transport is excellent, live music scene's great, good restaurants etc.

For natural beauty you're going to have to leave the city though, the Yarra river is gross compared to Sydney harbour and their beaches simply don't compare to what you'd get in the Eastern Suburbs, Shire and Northern Beaches here. There's spectacular scenery around outside Melbourne though, and Phillip Island, Mornington and the Torquay coast have some pretty great waves.
