Karate Kid Remake! Don't do it please!

Filmmakers over the years have really missed the point about "The Karate Kid". What made the movie special was more than just karate. There was real character development in the movie. The imitators (including the three karate kid sequels) had karate in it, but had no character development (or heart) in them at all.
Don't underestimate the 80s setting in the movie too. The innonence of it also made it the special movie it is. I have grave fears about how this movie will pan out.

Can you guys list any movies where the remake was better than the original?

I can name sequels better than the original, but not remakes.

I enjoyed "Get Carter" but I haven't seen the original.

Never back down? Another ghetto movie for todays kids to relate too.

If Pat Morita died then who will they cast to play Miyagi?

ENGINE is right about what was said up above there.

Read Engine's contribution spot on the money.

Who ever they cast as Miyagi will ruin the film.
If Will Smiths son hasn't ruined it already though.

Very wrong.

I've only seen about 20mins of the original (turned it off because it bored me to tears), but 'Casino Royale' may be one. I'm assuming it's a remake and not just a Bond movie that borrowed the title of the first (unofficial) Bond movie.

I can't off-hand think of any other re-makes that are better than their originals though.

one of the best remakes/adaptions IMO is a fistful of dollars ... it's an adaption of a japanese movie called bodyguard ...

the departed is one that is equal with the original ... both movies are great

both ocean's eleven movies were great too

there's been maybe a handful of remakes that stand up to their originals but more often than not they f**k up the legacy

Have they really run out of ideas that they have to resort to remakes and sequals to keep going?

Perhaps the movie industry should just shut down for a couple of years, thus giving writers some breathing space -enough to clear their heads and come up with some ideas themselves.

This would also make the actors and actresses go out and get real jobs where they'd earn $50,000 a year instead of $50million per movie! Actually, they wouldn't have to work ever again if they earned that kinda money (the millions I mean). If I ever had even $3million I'd be set for life I reckon!

Clash of the Titans Remake Being Written by Lawrence Kasdan

April 16, 2007
by Alex Billington
When I first watched Clash of the Titans in Astronomy class, I seriously thought it was some 1940 epic movie in the likes of Wizard of Oz that they made to tell this ancient Greek story. And damn did I love it! It was only later I found out that it was made in 1981 and is still an awesome film. And guess what, now they're remaking it - oh hell yes, this is a remake that is for once welcomed in my eyes!
clashofthetitans-medusa.jpg

The good news today states that Warner Brothers has set none other than screenwriting "hero" Lawrence Kasdan to write the remake, who wrote such insanely classic hits as Return of the Jedi, The Empire Strikes Back, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. And just think, now this is the guy who is writing the script for the remake of Clash of the Titans!
bubo.jpg
As a reminder for those who've forgotten, the film is about Zeus' son Perseus and his journey to save Princess Andromeda during which he must complete various tasks set out by Zeus, including capturing Pegasus and slaying Medusa. It was the last film where Ray Harryhausen did the special effects, and they truly are classic. The film had such unforgettable scenes as fighting the Kraken and Medusa and the best part, his mechanical owl Bubo (seen to the left)!
To me, this is a much better choice for a remake than The Day the Earth Stood Still. And given they've got Kasdan writing, this sounds like it could turn out just beautifully brilliant, despite everyone stating that they don't like remakes. Let's hope they get a great director, too!

I only discovered the other day that we can watch our PAL DVD's in NTSC format.

I popped on my PAL Karate Kid 3 DVD two days ago and I pressed system on my dvd button and PAL can be converted to American format.
I dunno, it gives it a better feel to the movie (NTSC).
May stretch their bodies upwards on the tele but it looks like an old video, with feel.
It looked better.

I thought of an idea that should have been included in the karate kid part 3.
Wanna know what would have made this film better?
Remember how Mr. Silver tells Daniel and Miyagi that he buried John Kreese 2 days ago in his deceit game plan?
Well, they should have penned in the plot that Daniel gets on the phone straight away and rings Johnny (Mr. Lawrence) and asks him if he's aware of his old teachers passing.
Then in a later scene Mr. Lawrence is walking around the streets and comes across John Kreese in shock amazement.
Then after Daniel busts that guys nose then runs off to find Mr. Silver at his dojo and is confronted with the awful truth about John Kreese not really dead in pops Johnny (Mr. Lawrence) and all hell breaks loose and he turns on his former old master John Kreese and helps Daniel in that night time dojo fight scene (Miyagi included).
I wish Johnny had of been in part 3 with a special guest appearance and this scenario would have been boss!
Because at the end of part 3 it was sort of, rushed? And it's not the ''all valley'' tournament without Johnny there!
I'm really warming to part 3 though. I like the scene when Mike Barnes walks in on Daniel in the back yard, ''why'd you call the cops for?''
That fight and blocking sequence was amazing then in walks Mr. Silver.
How tricky was Mr. Silver? He was a thinking mans man.

In the original KK the part where Daniel meets his mother for a meal at her works and taps the window to tell her he wants to check the karate place out if you watch closely you can see the people in the background watching them film the movie. As Daniel enters the door look down and you can see their legs watching on.

I cringe at certain scenes when watching KK3. Especially when Daniel walks in with the broken tree. Other parts he's a real jerk too. Yelling in Miyagi's face after all Miyagi done for him!
And wasn't he bloated in part 3?

I think it was a mistake in the original not to add the coach student fight at the end in the car park.
The bit that starts part 2 should have been the ending for part one like originally planned.

Chicken pox have left holes in my face and they all popped up on my fingers badly 2 weeks later.

St Brett...

Mike Barnes took on a part in "The Bold and the Beautiful". He was the most entertaining character there.
I agree with you about Mr Silver. That guys career never took off. Mayby, he riminded too many people of Steven Seagal.

But how cool would it have been had Johnny (Mr. Lawrence) appeared at the dojo in part 3 when the evil plan was unveiled near the end there?
In walks Mr. Lawrence and tells John Kreese he's a prick and he takes on his old master while Daniel and Miyagi dismantle those other 2.

He was in B&B? Serious? Any other movies?

I know Mr. silver was in that John Carpenter dracula movie.
I've seen him in other films but can't remember.
There was a channel 7 midday movie not long ago where he was in China shooting people in the head.
Yer he does look like Seagull.

Mr. Silver was evil and well planned in KK 3.
Hey, hey I like that I'm going to use that!
