Lachlan Coote

Rumour doing the rounds we are after him. Seeing as though Penrith are more inclined to play Michael Gordon at Fullback and Josh Dugan is linked to the Roosters or Tigers, It seems that we may have a good chance of nabbing him.

Thoughts?.

He does have one of the best set of hands in the competition.

I'd love to see that happen. Would be great to have Coote at the back and keep Merritt on 1 wing and McQueen on the other, that's a solid kick return trio. Hope there is a realistic possibility of this happening and not scuzzlebut. Also if it did happen, you'd have to ask what the he'll is Gus doin over there?:sarcasm:

Why put Merritt to fullback if you can get a younger specialist fullback with a ton of potential?

I've said it elsewhere, I'd absolutely love Coote, he has tremendous talent. If the Panthers are dumb enough to get rid of him we should jump at the chance and throw whatever we have at him.

For a start Merrit deserves a chance to play there & we can accomodate a vacant wing spot easy than bring in a new fullback.
Coote is anexceptional talent but why would one of the most astute judges in rugby league (Phil Gould) want to get rid of him ?
Also i think Maguire will have assessed this situation already & will have been watching Merrit closely since agreeing to coach us next year.

Panthers may not be able to keep him, The Vibe around the Penrith is Michael Gordon will be fullback and the rumour about Daniel Mortimer going to the club as well. Where is Coote going to play?.

Coote ideally would be FB, but I could also see him playing as a 6 aswell. I think Maguire would put GI into one of those, wherever he thinks GI would be most effective, and Coote could slot into the other.

That way both Merritt and Roberts could stay on the wings where they're best suited.

Coote is a fine player , however i would rather have a bigger fullback. Would love to go after Dugan.

Apparently we are rumoured to Josh Dugan as well but in a three way battle with the Tigers and the Roosters, Raiders also obviously hoping they can wrap him up long term.

Either way I can see us having a much better chance at Coote and I think he'd be better for the club as Dugan seems to have an attitude problem and would fit right in at the Roosters.

So Roosters seem to be the favourite for Dugan at the moment which would obviously mean they'd withdraw their offer for Coote if they'd were able to land Josh, leaving us in a two way race with Penrith and the Tigers. Penrith would also like to keep him as Raiders would with Dugan but with ongoing speculation that Flash Gordon is favourited for No.1 next year that may appear uncertain. Tigers do not have a known fullback for 2011. Souths do have options in Inglis or Nathan Merritt. So whether that affects Coote's decision i don't know. At this stage it's obviously just a rumour.

in my mind for a fullback , 1on1 , Dugan comes way ahead of Coote.
However could Coote be a half? if so , this would be an interesting move.

Coote would be great at the back and I would welcome him.

Merritt is a specialist winger and one of the most conistent and best in the game if you ask me. If we can get Coote there would be no problem with merritt staying put with roberts on the other wing.

which is why we should go for Dugan. We could do with a real gamebreaker at fullback. We have Crocker whose contract ends 2012 or offloading Roy in order to get another killer back to compliment Inglis. Coote may make a nice strong half , if we still go for him.

If the Panthers want to keep Coote they will. He's signed until 2015.

Personally I'd be moving Coote to 5/8 next season as he's nowhere near as dangerous at the back as Michael Gordon. He has an awesome boot on him, he has great vision and isn't afraid to put his body on the line. He's an awesome player, but I think he just lacks that little bit of speed and strength that Michael Gordon has to be in the same class as him at fullback.

Keep your grubby little rabbit feet off Coote, you are more than welcome to make a play for Purtell though. Seriously though I can't imagine us being stupid enough to let him go. We Panther fans have been saying for a while he has a future in the number 6. Some of your lot see that potential as well. Surely Gus can see it. If we are stupid enough to move him on I can see a riot at Panthers head office.

For the good of South Sydney i'd love to see Nathan Merrit play FB for Souths.
For the good of Penrith i'd expect the Panthers to keep Lachlan Coote at the Mountains.
