I noticed another thread about a comp between NSW & QLD Cup teams which got me thinking about perhaps merging the two to form the NRL second division.Essentialy it would be a reserve grade competition but with no NRL entities.Split into 2 conferences (NSW & QLD) teams would play each other once then the teams in their respective conferences twice for a total of 22 games. It would look something like this
QLD CONFERENCE 1.Central Qld (Cowboys),2.Ipswich (Titans),3.Norths Devils (Storm),4.Sunshine Coast(Sea-Eagles),5.Souths Magpies(Raiders) ,6.Easts Tigers(Bulldogs),7.Wynnum(Sharks),8.Redcliffe(Broncos)
NSW CONFERENCE 1.Newcastle Rosellas(Knights)2.Illawarra Steelers(Dragons),3.North Sydney(Rabbitohs),4.Newtown(Roosters),5.Wentworthville(Eels),6.Windsor(Panthers),7.*Wests Magpies(Tigers),8.Wellington Orcas(Warriors).
*In year one Balmain would play in Jim Beam Cup then alternate with the magpies.
So there you go a mix of traditional & ambitous clubs which i beleive would be an attractive competittion for TV.The other benefit to come out of this proposal is that at the moment the 2nd tier at the moment involves 23 teams spread across 2 comps so with fewer teams the standard would inevetibaly rise preparing the next generation of footballers for NRL.
