Metro League

I have brought this up before some time ago but there seems to be more american based people here. It is a rip off of AFL in the US but what about instead of developing just a reserve comp develop "Metro Rugby League'' nines.

eg. Instead of Jacksonville doing nothing with there other players they could develop another 2 or more nines sides that would back up as reserves to the rep side (in this case Axemen) in a regular Jacksonville Metro Nines comp.

The metro sides would have their own identity as such but be feeders. They would play nines and the best players would go up to the Axemen.

It could also help nearby cities initially give RL a go without the whole AMNRL deal. For instance someone in St Augustine thinks they can come up with enough players. The first year you give them a go in the Metro League. There is less pressure for player numbers. Time to get your feet on the ground.

Then Clubs like Axemen can rise and become the City Team in the AMNRL. Obviously over time these sides in Metro League might get the strength to go full sides but then you have a second division RL and the position to step up to the AMNRL.

The same could possibly be done in the other areas. New York/ New Jersey. Boston/New England in the future. Even Chicago if it comes off.

Any thoughts?

It does sound like a good idea, even if it was run as a midweek tag comp, indoors, whatever is possible.

That's exactly what we plan to do in Chicago. At the minute I'm trying to get a couple of colleges on board and introduce RL programs on campus. If we can develop a student competition in the area, the Chicago Saints could then act as a rep side for the best players and hopefully one day enter the AMNRL. We would then have two levels of competition in the area for players to compete in.

I think League can't go head to head with Union yet. Well over half the players probably play Union in winter.

Meaning: most of the league players are rugby union players keeping fit in the off-season.

Guys, time, money and the fact that more like 80% of RL players come from Union backgrounds are the reasons.

Remember, there is NO money in the AMNRL. Not a single player gets paid and to my knowledge no one on the Admin Caoching side is making anything either.

Why are we wanting to go "HEAD ON" with RU in the USA anyway ?

The goal should be building a self-sustaining infrastructure for RL.

I am not suggesting for one moment we go head on. Simply an idea to bring new players of lower level skill and experience (in either code) onto the field. Many AMNRL teams atleast claim to have well over the needed numbers on their rosters. These players can play in Metro. (eg. you could develop a NY/NJ Metro league with the left overs from the current teams in that area)

Also in the future as the standard goes up and you don't want to just play people because they come to training but field your best side and without twisting the rules to have 8 or 9 players on the bench.

Metro League would obviously have a lower bar to jump in the sense of standards thus you can try to attract more non rugby players without the fear of weakening your top team.

AMNRL is clearly moving towards a situation where the top teams and way to strong for the bottom teams (Thus the 90 point thrashing) and metro league might be the first step in giving a tiered approach to RL in the US.

If you look at usfooty.com (AFL) you can see the potential in such an idea.

but at the end of the day it is just that an idea:D
