Nathan Astle is returning home from India purely as a precaution.

The Black Caps star batsman will fly back to New Zealand at the end of the second test in Mohali, after feeling a twinge in his knee during a warm-up match earlier on the tour.

The second test begins Thursday.

Astle has only just recovered from surgery on his knee, and says the medical team does not know if the injury is related.

Astle says that with a big summer ahead, they have decided to take a safety-first approach.

Chris Nevin flew out yesterday to replace Astle for the upcoming one-day tri-series which also involves Australia.

And it has been confirmed that the Black Caps will play five one-day internationals in Pakistan next month, following on from the current tour of India.

The dates and venues have also been sorted out.

The Black Caps will not play in the violence-marred city of Karachi.

A Pakistan cricket official says the matches are scheduled to be played in Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Lahore at New Zealand's request.

The first one-dayer will be on November 22 with the last on December 1.

heard on the radio this morning that part of nathans ongoing problem may be rel;ated to arthritis which is a bloody shame...

Astle is a very handy cricketer to have - wouldn't make the Australian side, but that is beside the point. ;-)

As a one-day batsman who can bowl, he is handy at worst and a match-winner when on song. It is a real shame he has played very little cricket against Australian in recent times. I'd love to see the guy bat in Australia against the likes of Gillespie, Lee and Warne.

What are his stats like these days Ozbash? He's fallen in stature a bit, much like Craig McMillan in some ways.

I think that astle could make the aussie team quite easily personally i would have him above symonds and martyn he has scored 13 odi centuries. The last time he batted against Australia in a test he scored 150.

Since the start of the 2004 season he has 350 in 6 tests and in odi's since 22002 he has averaged abot 28 not as good as his average but has been carrying injuries.

Here comes another draw. Jeezus, Mark Richardson scored 145 in the same amount of balls that Hayden scored 380.

no , i cant say i did el dook. whats he doing in india ?

they must be hard pressed for commentators if they have his greatness hanging off a microphone,, tho him and that indian bloke with all the useless information would be great mates.

mr flemming is going through a rough patch but he will recover in time for the tri series... 8)
