It’s not Paines fault the rest of the team are as mentally weak AF. He and Cummins were the only two to show much at all.

I am not criticising Paine's attempt, but geeze, captaining a team to a 400 run loss and a score of 100 in the second innings.
No thanks.
He could have used the Smith affair to rally his troops and create a positive seige mentality.
Instead he let the team sook and throw in the towel.
You kind of did LOL

Yes the result was horrific, but he showed all the signs of good leadership IMO - your batting has rolled over to have it's tummy tickled before, that's not on Paine

As for the siege mentality, that's kind of what go you into this clusterf**k...

Completely unfair to judge Paine's captaincy credentials off the back of that. The team was never going to perform in that test.

Lets see him test his skills against the might of Zimbabwe before we judge.

The team was shot, they were never going to get close to SA after the week prior to the game. Blokes in the team wanted to kill Warner, they see their captain in tears, the coach resigns, they see Mitch Marsh on the team sheet again.

They played like a team who wanted to get home and put the whole shitfest behind them. If it wasn't for Cummins, Paine and South Africa's desire to put people to sleep by batting the game would have only lasted 2 and a half days.

Paine should be judged on what happens next.

If like the various versions of football we were talking 80-90 mins, then you might see a sterling performance - but across 5 days it was never going to happen - people tend to overlook how tough test cricket is - Cummins and Paine really showed the right stuff though

Until Steve Smith comes back into the test side, and a couple of others start performing with the bat we are gonna have more dark times in tests over the next 12 months

Good thing is, we can start preparing for the World Cup next year and give it a hot crack.
Travis Head most likely to be captain. We’ve learned from t20 to pick guys in form so with a ton of ODI to be played, let’s hope we do that and not stick with guys not performing just because of reputation or this crap ‘gut feeling’

Yeah I understand, but the real skill is being able to take siege mentality to the point where it gives motivation and binds the team together... without being jerks or cheating.
Examples include QLD VS NSW where QLD claim everything about everyone, including moaning about the appointed referees, then go out and win.
Melbourne Storm vs the rest.

Yes the batters have a history of falling in a heap....but to also see the bowlers become suddenly inept was pretty poor.

Needs a good man manager to go in and sort it all out.

By the way, they earn millions, they aren't just a school or grade cricket team.

So shape up men, recover quickly, earn your pay cheques.

They are not really good examples to be honest

Its easy to be that way when you have the cattle, once in a generation type players
(look at QLDs spine and its depth compared to NSW over the last 10 years)

Tuggers side case in point

The current side haven't proven to be mentally strong the past, so didn't surprise me they fell away badly. Regardless of other dramas

Also we are not giving enough credit to SA. Talk about generation players, their side is littered with them. Plus they have unearthed others

Partly or greatly which ever way you look at it, It goes back to Shield cricket. We aint breeding the MHusseys, Justin Langers, Ricky Pontings, Damien Martyns, Steve Waughs anymore through that system. Because Shield cricket now is an after thought rather than a serious grooming ground for test players.

T20 is our marquee competition. Wont surprise me in the near future we become the No1 t20 international side for years on end

Sometimes, when people speak, all they manage is to underline their own unfitness to do so

I think you overestimate the side.

Bowlers aside, this cricket team is bloody awful - our batsmen struggle to score 20 runs each.

Think of the Allan Border 80s teams.....

Minus Allan Border....(because we suspended him)

Thats what we've got.
