To a point. My experience with unions is that they often lose sight of the bigger picture and get hung up on small stuff. The ones I have dealt with aren’t great representatives for their employees.

Of course not. Don’t be f**ken ridiculous.

True. But it should be a last resort and only after genuine negotiation. In my experience I think it is relied on too often.

Don’t get me wrong - some organisations are dreadful at managing IR but equally some unions are just bullying idiot f**ken merkins.
Spot on gary, having a to deal with some of these Cowboys in the past I can only agree.

Unions are a necessary Evil but the ego’s of some of these so called leaders speaking for the working man needs to be reigned in. And you should see some of the plush quarters they work in.

From now until the end of time, Western governments will be flat out subsidising health care, which will also get more expensive as populations get older and demand increases. This might change when robots are able to replace doctors.

I'm not a fan of unions......dealt with plenty in my time and refuse to ever join one!

As much as I grumble about inconvenient industrial action, I am also a realist and acknowledge that without unions this country wold be poorer without them. Let's not forget ..

Annual Leave
Awards
Penalty Rates
Maternity Leave
Superannuation
Equal pay for women (ish)
Health and Safety in the workplace
Workers Compensation
Sick leave
Long Service Leave
Unfair dismissal laws etc

Unions go way back in this country to 1804 - Castle Hill rebellion: protest on conditions and rations. Or even before that 1791 Convicts strike: demanding daily not weekly issue of rations.

Not saying that it has been smooth sailing with unions by any stretch.

No doubt that responsible unions have an important role to play.

Since Howard bought in his fair pay crap the average factory workers pay has barely risen in 10yrs.
Most other costs have doubled.

I have never been part of a union. And may mever be but how disposable big corporations treat some older workers is a disgrace.

100% there have been some diabolical unions in the past with the Painters and Dockers disrupting the waterfront, CFMEU and their corrupt construction sector as well. All the same if the unions did not black ban work in The Rocks and Potts Point (Jack Mundy?), most of our historical buildings would be just a memory.

probabaly ?

only if the new owners probabaly dont want to make a profit
Sigh.

You are suggesting that tax payers got screwed over when energy companies got privatised.

I am suggesting that energy policy is so f**ken shit that ownership is most likely irrelevant. Either way, the tax payer is going to get f**ked in the arse every time they receive their energy bill.

True. How the f**k can japan be getting cheaper gas than our domestic market. Spewing.

Stunning that in the middle of the LNG boom where record amounts of gas were being exported that our Government didn't negotiate with Santos, Origin, Woodside etc to ensure that they were also obliged to supply a certain amount to the domestic market.

F**k up of epic proportions. But, yeah sure 'privatisation' is the problem.

No doubt that they serve a purpose but the hard work was done long ago. A lot of them now are power hungry morons who love nothing more than causing grief. I witness it daily in my job.

Anyone remember the HSU stuff from a few years ago?

The good they do does not outweigh the bad from my point of view and what i see.

It would be a pretty cool job though to be a union merkin. Getting paid to be a complete merkin.

I reckon I'm pretty well qualified. I should keep an eye on seek.com.au
