Australasian Rugby League: note:Round 2, Northern Eagles gets a bye for this week.
Telstra NRL Premiership 2002:
Sunday:
Wests Tigers 22-16 Parramatta Eels
At Leichhardt Oval, Sydney, Australia
Att: 15,502 The Tigers' produced the shock win of the Premiership so far as they defeated NRL favourites the Eels' at Leichhardt Oval. It was 16 all when Mark O'Neill clinched a late try to shellshock last year's Grand Finalists, Parramatta. Penrith Panthers 16-24 St George-Illawarra Dragons
At Penrith Stadium, Penrith, Australia
Att: 10,207 The Panthers' produced a strong peformance on home soil to test St George. At 22-6 at the break it looked like the Dragons' were in for an easy ride but the Panthers' produced a very spirited comeback to 22-12. The Panthers' went over 63 minutes through the game but the video ref called a controversial no try which dented the spirit of Penrith and the Dragons' went on from there. New Zealand Warriors 21-14 Sydney Roosters
At Ericsson Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand
Att: 14,378 The Warriors' have got off to a perfect start in their NRL campaign after a shock 21-14 win over the in-form team, Sydney Roosters. The New Zealand outfit were 14-4 up at half time after the Roosters' failed to cope with the pressure on the Roosters' defence. Ali Lauiti'iti crossed the tryline on two occasions to get the ball rolling for the fired up Warriors'. Australian born centre John Carlaw also scored for the Warriors.' The first try came about after a break by former Parramatta ace PJ Marsh which lead to a bomb by New Zealand captain Stacey Jones caught by Meli who off loaded to Ali Lauit'iti for his first try of the game. But the Roosters' hit back after a strong start by the Warriors'when Hegarty scored but the Warriors'scored two more tries to take a 14-4 lead at the break. The second half was similar with the Warriors' exposing the Roosters'defence on a number of occasions. Ali Lauiti'iti crossed over the line just three minutes into the second half which effectively ruined any major comeback by the Roosters'and when backs Justin Hodges and Shannon Hegarty sittered two high bombs in the second half it was all over for the Roosters'.Despite two tries by Anthony Minichiello and Craig Wing it simply wasn't enough. Jones finished off a good nights work for the NZ oufit when he kicked a last minute field goal to seal the win.
Saturday:
Canberra Raiders 22-30 South Sydney Rabbitohs
At Bruce Stadium, Canberra, Australia
Att: 17,111 The Bunnies' forgot about last weeks shocking defeat to the Roosters'on home turf when they stormed to a 30-22 victory over the Raiders'in the capital on Saturday. The Rabbits' were leading 18-12 at half time after tries from Wade McKinnon, Craigie and Brent Grose. The Raiders'did score two tries in reply to the Rabbitohs'but Sydney still lead at the half way point. In the second half the game was very even and the Rabbits' went further ahead to 24-12 when prop Paul Stringer scored in the 42nd minute. But Canberra hit back in style and stretched the tiring Souths'defence when they scored two of their own tries to get within just two points of the Rabbits'at 24-22. But a late try by Souths' through Stanley sealed a well desearved victory for the Bunnies'. Newcastle Knights 50-18 North Queensland Cowboys
At Energy Australia Stadium (Marathon), Newcastle, Australia
Att: 13,500 The raigning premiers Newcastle produced another dazling performance to thrash the Cowboys at Marathon Stadium. The star of the day was Golden Boot and Clive Churchall medal winner Andrew Johns who kicked seven goals from ten attempts. Friday:
Cronulla Sharks 30-24 Melbourne Storm
At Toyota Park, Sydney, Australia
Att: 11,151 Melbourne produced a storming comeback to nearly snatch victory from the Sharks'when they came back from 18 points down midway through the second half. But the Sharks' held on for a tight six point win when Robbie Kearns and Bell's tries were converted on 70 and 75 minutes. Brisbane Broncos 20-20 Canterbury Bulldogs
At ANZ Stadium, Brisbane, Australia
Att: 22,300 A Bulldogs'team who were battered by a soft team last week earned a well deserved draw against a high on confidence Broncos'outfit at the ANZ Stadium. The Bulldogs' lead at the break 14-8. Allan Langer, playing his first NRL game at ANZ since 1999 after spending two seasons in England with Warrington Wolves, set up Brisbane's first try and their 14 all equaliser. But despite his hardwork, it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs'snatched a 20 all draw. Brisbane were the team making all the first moves scoring the first tries of both halves but the Doggies'were keep coming back. The Dogs'were behind when Lebanon international Hazem El Masri scored an equaliser to shock the 22,000 crowd who braved out heavy rain to come out and watch the mighty Broncos'.

THE ROUND OF SHOCKS, what did you think? I mean, the Bunnies' lost 40-6 to Sydney City Roosters last week before 35,316 fans at Aussie Stadium (Sydney Football Stadium -SFS) and then in Round 2 on Saturday they beat Canberra Raiders 30-22 at Bruce Stadium in the capital city (ACT) Canberra before a strong crowd of 17,000 fans. The Warriors' shocked the Roosters' over in New Zealand and the Wests Tigers at home before 15,000 crowd defeating last year's minor premiers and Gand finalists, well, a good few shocks there already, oh, and 20-20 at ANZ between Broncos' and Doggies'. Some right shocks, what do all u Aussies' think of that? and NZers? Oh yeagh, and the crowds, good attendance's so far, why? why do you think that is? and will they keep turnuing up? especially with shocks like these week in and week out, I mean almost anyone can be anyone, it's real good footy to be watching ya know. Do you think it has anything to do with NRL's (www.nrl.com) and News Corporation's (www.newscorp.com) new promotion thing, advertising broadcasting etc, or whatever it is they are planning to do? Is their promotional activities working out in an effective way do u think? rj.

"The Panthers' went over 63 minutes through the game but the video ref called a controversial no try which dented the spirit of Penrith"

I'm not trying to deny the fact that it was a sobering second half for Saints but this report that a vid ref calltook away aPenrith win is really staring to wear a bit thin.

For a start, the Pantherswhere awarded a tryfrom a knock-on which the vid ref missed and the referee took a number of air swings when it came to forward passes and general niggle in the play the ball.

But mostly, its themedia who seem to have forgotten how awful Penrith were.

I was very impressed with Penrith's ability to come back in the second half but they were shocking in the first half. There seems to be very little reporting of the fact that Penrith were just bloody awful defensively on the edge of the ruck.

Yeah I gotta agree there, Penrith Panthers are a shocking side, the wooden spoon's gonna be between Canberra Raiders, the Panthers themselves and the North Queensland Cowboys of course.

At the moment, I still feel the Panthers will even though the Cowz' have probably got off to a worse start.
