‘OLSEN GOT A $35K BROWN PAPER BAG’

THERE is a fantastic story in Olsen Filipaina’s new book about the day he was paid $35,000 cash in a brown paper bag — a lot of money back in 1985 — to sign with the Sydney Roosters. (The median Sydney house price was $73,000)

The Kiwi powerhouse had been on the verge of signing with the Cronulla Sharks and had actually agreed to terms.

Olsen then received a call from Ron Jones, the boss of the Roosters, and agreed to meet him at the Eastern Suburbs Leagues Club.

Jones offered double what the Sharks had — but insisted he sign on the spot.

Olsen remembers a surreal scene in Ron Jones’ office. This is how he tells the story in the book.

“A huge wad of cash appeared in a brown paper bag, just like in the movies,” he said, “and then they ran it through a money-counting machine.”

There were no player managers in those days but his wife Leslie was there.

“It was more cash than we’d ever seen,” Leslie says. “We were astounded and it was then we realised they were a money club. Whatever they said, they could make happen.”

To heighten the drama, Jones offered Olsen and his cash an escort to his car, which he politely declined.

Looking back Olsen applauds Jones’ strategy: “No Polynesian sending money home to take care of their family could ever say no to that sort of cash, double the amount of any other offer. It was like being hypnotised, seeing it in that bag. The possibilities were endless.

“I had agreed terms for two years with Cronulla but they hadn’t produced a contract.”

Filipaina had only one season at the Roosters and played eight games.

this is the link for it, behind a wall

Well we still got the one and only Mighty Sir Thomas Bishop who was meant to sign with the Rorters but they had reneged on the deal so he headed south over the Captain Cook Bridge and signed with us.

Lucky I guess that it was post Taren Point Punt days or he might of given us the punt too.

The Big O, I remember running into him a few times at Rosehill, and when playing baseball for Ryde Eastwood at training, he would cut across the park on his way home.
I remember at test match where he ripped us apart and especially Wally Lewis
RIP Big O
Was that the one where Kiwis picked him even though he was playing reserve grade ? I think that may have happened more than once .

Yep. He ripped Wally apart in a few tests. I'll get some links. And I will say this, besides Sludge, Wally was just about the best I've seen, along with Brett Kenny. I definitely rate them both above Johns and Thurston.
So for Olsen to rip Wally apart was something to behold.

"I had a plan for Wally Lewis, a tackle called the Archie Bumper - which was running over the top of him," Filipaina explained.

Would be fitting if there's a tribute to Big O tonight considering he was the trailblazer for the Polynesian footballers. Some fascinating stories there that show how far racial vilification has progressed since the 80's.

Just saw that film director Ivan Reitman has passed away, he was one of big Arnie's favourite directors, directed him in Twins.

Also RIP Mark Shulman, St George halfback who took over from Billy Smith, played in their 1977 grand final team, but more importantly coached in the lower grades at the Sharks in the late 80s.

Mark Shulman would have to be one of the smallest footballers to have ever played first grade. RIP.

I am pretty sure the Mark Shulman didn't play in the 77 GF although he was named in the side and was kitted up sitting beside Harry Bath the coach. At the time I had inside info that Mark was carrying a very serious back or neck injury and was told one more knock to it could have major consequences for him and his health.

He was a great little player and had a ton of heart.

RIP Mark Shulman
