Overhauling the domestic season schedule

There’s been a bit of talk on the test radio coverage that there’s not enough emphasis on first class cricket, here’s a few ideas or overahaul the season.

1. Scrap the state 50 over comp. Repalce it with a Possibles V Probales, 5 match series. (Effectively Australia vs Australia A) less ODI’s will be played in the future, state comp no longer needed. Could be squads of 15-16 to allow plenty of guys a taste.

2. Have a Possibles vs Probables first class game before the tests. This would provide some guys a taste of higher level cricket.

3. Start Sheffield Shield immediately after the conclusion of the Possibles v Probables 50 over matches, run it through to Christmas. Shield final was be scrapped. You could possibly fit all 10 rounds in before Xmas.

4. BBL would be pushed back to start on Boxing Day, allowing time for more shield cricket before Xmas. Increase BBL overseas quota to 5 players per team, only allowing 4 to play at any one time. This would free up some peripheral Aussie players to instead play some sanctioned FC cricket. Such as against a touring team, or any intra Australian game.

The top bowlers wouldn’t need to play the Possibles V Probables matches, could be rested

Run Shield Cricket and 50 over state cricket concurrently. Keep Shield format as is. 50 overs they play each other once, too 2 teams play in the final.

Start Big Bash on New Year's Day

* The 50 over comp at the start of the season, each side plays each other once, the top 2 sides to contest the final.
* BBL to start at the conclusion of the new years test
* Shield games to be played concurrently with the tests.

Sadly, the BBL currently pays for all other cricket.

It will continue starting at the beginning of school holidays and running till their end until we are all long in the ground.

We must have the 4 day state cricket run concurrently with the test series, if we have injuries or form drops, then we need 4 day form to pick replacements not ODI form as has been done in the past.

Agree with most above.

Shield: needs to start with 4games pre the first test off the summer so that players can either gain form or audition for vacant spots. Then have it run concurrently with the tests finishing before Christmas. Shelve the final, it is a waste of time.

Big Wank: start it on new years eve for 6 weeks.

One day comp: I don't mind the truncated carnival type format, play it over 2 weeks, rotating it between states who all have at least 2 grounds to play it at.

It does, but that’s mostly through TV. If anything the TV ratings will be higher later in January & in February. CA would need to be prepared to take a hit to the crowds.

I honestly don’t see the point of the state based one day comp anymore, we’ll see less and less ODI’s played in the future.

I like the idea of starting BBL at the end of the New Years test, it’s difficult to see CA going for it though. One selling point, the test batsmen could be more involved in the BBL. Perhpas more international stars would be help too.

I do wonder whether Australia's poor recent ODI record is due to playing it all so early in the season when players are still rusty and searching for form. Move it to after the Big Bash and you'd have to think the quality improves.

The BBL is not moving, so like it or not suggesting it does is irrelevant.

It's fashionable (and incorrect) to blame it for all of our ills, but as Timbo says it pays the bills and it will continue to be played across the best period of the year.

But it is a factor in our batsman's lack of application, BBL may be a cash cow, but to the detriment of our test team, which shouldn't be happening.

Is it really?

Just like the IPL has ruined Indian batting I suppose....

But they don't play theirs in the middle of the season when their test team is playing

Well if the Test team is playing, they can't be affected by playing in the BBL, can they?

It's a cop out. Every time anyone talks about batting, it's always "that gosh-darned T20 rubbish". But that T20 stuff doesn't affect India. Or England.

So why does it seemingly affect us?

The problem is systemic and starts at junior level.
