Barcelona charged after fans sung 'Ronaldo is a drunk' chant

By Pete Jenson for MailOnline 15:25 17 Feb 2015, updated 16:00 17 Feb 2015

The Spanish League agreed on Tuesday to charge Barcelona after their supporters were heard singing ‘Ronaldo is a drunk’ at the Nou Camp on Sunday night. The case will now be passed to the anti-violence committee who must decide whether or not to open an investigation.

In a statement the League said it had listened to audio recordings of the match and were in agreement that in minute 65 of the game around 200 supporters repeatedly chanted ‘He is a drunk, Ronaldo is a drunk’.

The action taken against Barcelona is part of a clampdown on all forms of crowd trouble and chants that are interpreted as being likely to provoke trouble. It comes after a Deportivo supporter was killed in a pitched battle before a match at Atletico Madrid’s Vicente Calderon stadium in November.

This is the 52nd time since the death of the Deportivo fan Francisco Romero on November 30 that the league has asked the anti-violence committee to take action over a chant.

Twelve different clubs first division clubs, and eight second division teams have been targeted but so far of the 52 league complaints, the anti-violence committee have only opened 10 investigations.

So far no action has been taken but after the league reported Real Madrid supporters at Bernabeu for chanting ‘Messi is geniused’ in December, the club were reported to have identified the 17 supporters who started the chant and expelled them.

The Spanish League now have officials at every La Liga match with the job of listening for abusive songs or chants.

Despite the apparently frivolous nature of the song aimed at Ronaldo, Real Madrid fans were keen for action to be taken. Over 80 per cent of voters in one online poll demanded a stand be taken.

The ‘drunk’ references towards Ronaldo were made after various photographs and videos were published of him enjoying 30th birthday party celebrations on the night Real Madrid were beaten 4-0 by city neighbours Atletico Madrid.

Could you imagine if the LFP was running English football this season? Everyone but LFC's fans would be banned for hurting Stevie's feelings.

...Wow...but it's funny, because you'd expect to see this type of political correctness to come out of England before Spain...

Fans who still sing about Gerrard at non-LFC games should probably move on and focus on supporting their own team a little bit more...

And scousers doing impressions of planes at OT should do the same...

But I digress.

Spain are cracking down on the fans as a few of them died at a recent deportivo vs athletico match.
There is a big problem in Spain with fans. Prob something to do with the economy struggling.

Speaking of political correctness, someone should tell the Chelsea fans on Paris underground trains.
Little Englanders at it again.

Those chants are fine, even ones in bad taste should be met with nothing but criticism at those doing them.

Obviously there are some lines not to cross such as racial slurs.

They'll be having a real dilemma when Spurs fans refer to themselves as yids.

How odd to compare a couple of idiots in an away fan section to a whole big section at e.g. Stamford Bridge singing about Gerrard...

I agree the crackdown is a (over)reaction to what happened in November. But I really disagree that violent fan incidents are a "big problem" in Spain. They don't have segregation at a lot of the grounds.

(Racism is still a problem though)

How do you say 'self-deprecating chant' in espanol?

WTF?????????

This is probably the least offensive chant I've ever heard at a football stadium!

This story would be an overreaction but the Spanish fa do believe they have a big problem with fans.
That is why they are coming down on any fans that sing derisory chants.

This is not a one off incident of them coming down hard and it is because of a problem with violent fans.

The biggest problem watching football in Spain are the coppers. They are a nightmare.

There wasn't the belief that there was a fan problem until the Atletico incident. They didn't have the Chant Police in action before that.

I went to a Clasico 4 years ago and there were plenty of chants (translated) of "Guardiola twinkie" and "Messi Argentine Arsehole".

Not to forget the omnipresent "Puta Catalunya" which the Spanish FA will never ban, but that's another story...
