Queensland Rugby League can today confirm Matt Ballin will join the Queensland Maroons coaching team for the 2024 State of Origin series.

As a proud Queenslander who has worked with the Origin team on game days as well as the state’s Under 19 team, Ballin is well credentialed to take on a greater responsibility with the Maroons following Cameron Smith’s decision to step down from his assistant coaching role.

Community visits to ignite Maroons Origin preparations

Queensland Maroons players and coaching staff will come together in Brisbane on Saturday to formally commence the squad’s 2024 State of Origin preparations.

Matt played QLD dummy half in Smith's stead for one game in 2010. Without checking, by memory I think it was Game 1 in Sydney. QLD won. That 2010 series was our most recent 3 game clean sweep.

I would like to see Braydon Trindall in Maroon. At the end of his career he will have deserved at least as many qld jerseys as Milford

Gilbert we will miss. Hess should only ever be present for an Origin game as a spectator.

Hess definitely out for the year. The season proper hasn't even started and we've lost 1 probable run on and a depth player.

I don’t think we will need any more middle forwards than Tino, Flegler, Cotter, Carrigan, Mo, Hopgood, Horsburgh, Collins, and Welsh for the whole series. Three in a row: here we go

I can't wait for Kalyn to resume playing in a QLD jersey.

Game 3 in Brisbane piles the pressure on the Blues to shut QLD out with victories in both G1 and 2. One slip up where the Blues buckle under the pressure will set up a nightmare decider at Suncorp. A first time Origin coach will be PR massaged as an advantage by the Blues press but they aren't being coached by one of Origin's best ever players.

Kalyn will provide attacking options equally as potent as Reese Walsh. He has an exemplary running, kicking and passing game so expect fireworks from him however he is utilised.

We are probably in the best position leading into a series that we have been in since 2017. It should be a cracking series. QLD 3 in a row in 2024!
