If you havent heard,

Jim Beam and the Brisbane Broncos have come under fire by the media and protesters for running a "Miss Bronco" beauty pageant in Brisbane.

The pageant is in aid of charity and of course, the models, like they do in all pageants that are held all over the world, participate on their own free will.

Personally, I'm not all that interested in pageants, but thats only my opinion. There is nothing wrong with them though, and this is in aid of charity.

The protesters used slogans such as "sexism is rape culture" :-s and "Bad Taste Broncos". They also claimed that Brisbane were stupid for putting on the pageant in light of the Bulldogs investigations :-s and believed the pageant portrays women as just pices of meat. I would've thought there is a big different, a massive difference, between ageant in aid of charity where models choose to participate to allegations of gang rape by players.

Ten News, who I saw the report from, made no mention of what the pageant was for, and portrayed it in poor taste.

Headlines such as: "Bad taste Broncos.......yet another slap in the face for Rugby League............Rugby League newest SEX SCANDAL"

What sex scandal Channel 10?

I wouldn't expect anything different from the station that brings us victorian ballett.

I'm not a fan of pageants, but its for charity and there is nothing wrong with them, they are held all over the world. Therefore, Channel 10 and those protesters should be ashamed in my opinion.

People are looking for anything to take our game down the tiolet, even if it means not telling the truth on a national news broadcast.

Just my opinion.

Cheers.

Ridiculous that the media would stoop so low to attempt to sensationalize this event. Selectively leaving out the key details such as "Charity" shows how much they are willing to twist a situation to "Create" a story which sells newspapers or generates ratings.

That is just ridiculous. Linking models volunteering to work for charity with rape is absurd and defamation. They should make a public apology to those concerned.

The media in general, are trying to put a negative spin on absolutely everything remotely related to rugby league at the moment. It boosts ratings and sells newpapers and magazines. That is because it is human nature to get a buzz out of other people's misfortunes. The more doom and gloom there is in the rest of the world, the better we all feel about our own miserable existances. The media just cashes in on it.

I don't care how many half baked scandles there are, it won't stop me following/watching rugby league and supporting the mighty penny panthers.

You must admit however, it does not exactly promote any improvement in player's attitude towards women, by having scantily clad women dressed up and parading themselves in front of players. Even if it is for charity, could they not do it at some later stage of the year, when all these scandals have been resolved?

From what I've heard, the protest spokersperson was a well known feminist. As has already been pointed out, she criticised both it's timing and it's taste, and alligned it with rape.

I'd just like to know which of the girls participating in this charity she was speaking on behalf of, and if she actually asked them what their thoughts were on their voluntary involvement. It sh*ts me when these idiots hijack other peoples lives and claim to represent them.

Were they whinging about the existence of cheergirls too? What's the difference?

I don't like the idea of feminism. It is blatant sexism..if they are about making women equal to men (seems they have an inferiority complex), they should call themselves equalists, not feminists.
Imagine if there was a group of men called masculinists - there would be an uproar and they would be called chauvinists etc..

Going to say exactly what i said on nospam37:

I just saw the protest they had outside this pageant - it was on the news.

Look, let me firstly just say that I'm not a fan of beauty pageants either, not at all. But one of these protesters was making the point that in light of the allegations against the bulldogs - that this was in bad taste.

Is it just me, or is there a HUGE, LARGE, GIGANTIC, and SEVERE difference between rape allegations, and models CHOOSING to be part of a beauty pageant! Especially for CHARITY! These girls aren't forced to get up there and parade around for men - they are models who obviously enjoy their work, as they CHOSE to take part in this activity.

Just calling it how i see it.

On SBS last night there was a program about the plight of female jockeys. The program followed the career of former Queensland leading apprentice Bernadete Cooper when she left Queensland & rode in Sydney. The program covered her rides, her ups & downs while she was there which was over a period of 2 or 3 years. The program also documented the history of how wemon jockeys got the right to ride as professionals in the male dominated sport.

However, there was one segment where even the greatest male chauvinist would have blushed. Two male jockeys accosted a young female jockey while she was watching the races on a TV monitor in the jockey's room. They uttered a long list of obsenities to her & suggested among other things she should join them & make a porn movie. These male jockeys must not have realised they were on camera. Their faces were edited out of focus but they were still wearing jockey silks and no doubt those close to racing could identify who they where.

Now lets see how the press & AJC handles this.

STORYLINE AUSTRALIA - A GIRL, A HORSE, A DREAM
The story of Australian women jockeys and their extraordinary battle to compete with men on the track, following one particular jockey, Bernadette Cooper, or Bernie as she calls herself. Today, 20 years after the breaking of the ban, the glacial progress of women jockeys means Bernie is one of a few women racing (and winning) on major Metropolitan tracks. Filmmaker Rachel Landers followed Bernie around the country to metropolitan and provincial tracks and finally to Melbourne for the Spring Carnival (and the biggest horseracing prize of all, the Melbourne Cup). The program takes the viewer into the seldom seen engine rooms of the races - jockey enclaves, Stewards inquiries, Barrier Trials and the back-breaking daily track work that starts at 4am with steaming, edgy, foul tempered horses pounding down the turf. Racing NSW stewards will hold an inquiry into several lewd comments made by a jockey in a documentary screened on SBS last night.

The program - A Girl, A Horse, A Dream - followed the exploits of former Queensland jockey Bernadette Cooper, who has ridden with success in Sydney.

In one scene, a male jockey, whose face is obscured, is heard to make ribald remarks to a female rider in the jockeys' room.

"We will be seeking to interview that person in respect to remarks made towards a female jockey," Racing NSW chief steward Ray Murrihy said yesterday.

Murrihy stressed "no complaint had been made to the stewards or Racing NSW by any jockey".

The Australian Racing Board yesterday reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring participants in the industry are free from sexual harassment and discrimination.

"Discrimination, whether it is related to gender, ethnicity or any other attribute, has absolutely no place in Australian racing," it said in a statement. ". . . This documentary comes to light at a time when the community in general has a heightened awareness about the management of issues of sexual harassment in sport, and racing remains committed to addressing the problem in an open manner.

These sexist fools are not taken seriously by anyone besides the media clowns.
The reason they hate men so badly, is because we have what they never can, operational male genitalia.

Excellent comment NPK. Can I be a masculinist?

I heard about the challenge made to the cheerleaders on the footy show last night. If they take my Mermaids away there will be hell to pay.

That is disgusting. Midgets should never under any circumstances be allowed to make porn. I once saw the previews for a midget porn flick called "Itty Bitty Bang Bang" and the memry of it has scarred me for life... (shudders)
