Less money is never a good thing, but it may be a case of necessary short term pain for long term gain, particularly if through long term planning and the current restructuring of the game they’re in a stronger position in three years to negotiate a more advantageous deal.

EXTRA Super League matches are set to be broadcast on free-to-air TV, even though Sky can show every one.

The new £23 million contract will see all top flight games shown in some way, with video referees at all six every week and fewer on hated Thursday nights.

But SunSport understands 12-15 will be screened on a terrestrial option, more than the 10 Channel 4 currently get.

It is likely they will all stay on that network, with the hope they will put in some money as a result of getting extra.

However, the BBC – which currently has the contract for the Challenge Cup and England’s forthcoming Test series with Tonga - and Channel 5 have also been sounded out.

Sky will still get first choice of two matches a week, with Friday night and Saturday afternoon or Sunday evening set to be the popular options.

Channel 4 - and any other free-to-air broadcaster - will then get their pick, with the rest streamed through the Rugby Football League’s Our League platform or Sky’s online services on a pay per view basis as a result of having more cameras at grounds.

That will see money kept in the cash-strapped sport, which has seen a number of League One clubs withdraw.
SunSport understands discussions are already taking place over people being able to buy a season pass, for every match, a club season pass – allowing them to watch their team’s games, and how to price a game-by-game approach.

Home clubs will then get the largest share of takings, making up any shortfall from supporters not paying at the gate.


Matches at Grand Finalists Catalans will be shown, meaning people will not have to pay for flights and accommodation to head to Perpignan.

However, it is felt those who would have gone – with some clubs taking more than 1,000 fans - will still go anyway.

And it is believed rugby league bosses hope to agree a deal with French media giant L’Equipe that would see every Dragons match broadcast on the other side of the Channel.

Also we dont know what is happening with streaming rights yet and if that is another source of future revenue for SL

Approximately 1/2 the tv revenue within two years. I hope the clubs and competition can make the changes needed to survive but the silver lining is the FTA and every game available to watch live which will bring in new eyeballs and sponsorship. The RLWC on FTA in England was a success, and hoping this is a stepping stone to bigger things in the future

The well-documented new broadcast deal that will come into play during the 2024 season is bringing changes that are set to satisfy supporters. From next season, every single game will be broadcast live in some capacity, with Sky set to show every game from the first 15 rounds on their own platforms.

That, in itself, will be welcome news to supporters. However, in a further development, it has now been confirmed that games are set to be staggered wider across weekends than in the past. In previous seasons, it has been common to see five games take place on a Friday night, with no games taking place at a weekend.

However, moving forward there will be no more than three games taking place on the same day. The reason for this is that there has been a limit put on the number of games that can be shown on any night, in part due to the fact Sky Sports only have the capability to broadcast three games on any one night.

As a result, games are set to regularly take place across a weekend, spanning from Thursday to Sunday. Thursday nights, which themselves are unpopular with supporters who like to attend games, are still active in the calendar, which is a change from what was anticipated. It had been suggested that there would be an effort to reduce the number of Thursday night games. However, only four of the first 15 rounds don't feature Thursday nights and it has been confirmed more will be added later in the season.

That will remain a source of frustration, but games will at least be spread out more, allowing supporters to watch more games on a weekly basis.

Its unclear at this point.
There's two schools of thought
1. RFL took less money as Sky offered to produce all games and a streaming service that RFL would then get revenue from the ons ales from
2. Sky stiffed the game again and offered less and got a lot more content. It will depend Id say on if RFL have the rights to on-sell the streaming service and games to a FTA provider.

It that is the case then its not such a bad deal. 2mill less for every game produced and ability to on-sell.
