Yeh it’s the 4th biggest rugby comp in world by attendance

tv has been interesting, one of the things holding SL back has been lack of fta exposure. Challenge cup on bbc gets around 1million viewers. This year for first time SL has been in fta for a few games on ch4 and rated well. From next year every game is going to be available for first time ever. Ch4 is getting more games and we are waiting to hear what SL will do with the remaining ones not in sky each week.

Thanks for posting, Adam Hills would be an awsome host :D that's encouraging to see that games will be on fta, sports can't grow if they are hidden behind a paywall.

Last question ( for now ) how do today's crowds compare with crowds from leagues hey day ? I remember seeing highlights on Wide World of Sports of packed stadiums watching those great Wigan and St Helen teams, am I remembering this with Rose coloured glasses ? Or were the 80s when the game was at its highest ?

The ch4 coverage has been a breath of fresh air compared to the second class citizen sky treats the sport pr the amateurish bbc. id love them to get a game every friday night, sky Saturday night and Sunday afternoon games and the other 3 games on a streaming platform.
the game in uk and France will struggle until they can get another decent tv deal. It’s dropped from the SL days of around 70million pound to this deal of 20million pound with sky. It’s cutting the clubs throats and making the second and third divisions totally unviable.

Round 27 saw Super League clubs break the 1.5 million mark for cumulative attendances over the season, the first time in five years that figure has been reached and the highest by far since the competition reduced the number of games per campaign in 2019.

Across 162 games and 27 rounds in 2023, the average crowd attending each fixture has fallen just shy of 9260. That’s only the fifth time that the average has surpassed the 9000 barrier since the birth of Super League back in 1996. It’s also an increase of above 10% when compared to last term.

Let’s not forget that people are still feeling the affects of the cost of living crisis which has somewhat eased of late but has affected people’s standard of living for nearly two years.

Season crowd avg’s

1st: Leeds - 13,770
2nd: Wigan 13,497
3rd: St Helens - 12,782
4th: Hull FC - 12,364
5th: Warrington - 10,887
6th: Catalans - 9,062
7th: Hull KR - 8,770
8th: Leigh - 7,253
9th: Castleford - 7,185
10th: Salford - 5,291
11th: Huddersfield - 5,247
12th: Wakefield - 4,303
Those crowd figures for both Leeds and hull fc are pretty impressive considering the poor season both clubs have had this year and for the last couple of seasons.

usual poor crowds for the likes of Salford and Huddersfield which aren’t helped by their stadium issues.

Yeh we may not have the most fans in RL but they are pretty passionate bunch! For a city the size of hull (261k) having over 20k avg attending SL games is pretty impressive,

What do you think KR’s ceiling is in terms of attendances?

it’s a shame that hull is somewhat geographically isolated compared to other clubs in Yorkshire like Leeds or super league era Bradford who have large settlements surrounding them within a 10-15 miles radius.

Hard to say, stadium is currently around 10k but everyone wants to be in east stand so its pretty chockers! Also we don’t get many travelling fans come to Hull so both clubs suffer from that. We took 1500 to Wakefield last Sunday!

east stand extension (1500) and new west stand planned with some continued success and we can def be pushing for 10k avg I reckon. The craven st area at south end has been a huge success for pre and post game drinks.

would be great to see KR regularly crack 10k a season and with regular success i.e. Challenge cup wins and top 4 finishes it’s more than doable.

are these stadium upgrades confirmed?

There’s a big master plan now the club own the stadium and surrounding land. first cab off the rank is a 1million pound training pitch at the south end which is under way, then new training facilities at that end of the land.
The club have said replacing the west stand is the next priority as more and better corporate suites are needed and the full season memberships for west stand seating sells out every year. After that hopefully it’ll be the east stand extension.

The main seated stand.

this shows the master plan and the big parcel of land we now own. Lots of opportunity. It’s no coincidence we now have some major development company owners join our board!

With a new west stand that should take the capacity of craven park to around 15k.

right?

Good to see a traditional club getting its act together and doing well both on and off the pitch.

Depends on design and how many corporate boxes are in it but should add at least another 2000 seats the. 1800 with the east stand extension gets us around 14k.that’ll be plenty for us, we’ve never cracked more than 9k avg in our history.

In fact, ten of Super League's dozen clubs have seen attendance increases this season, with the biggest jump coming at newly promoted Leigh Leopards.
Recording a season average of 7,253, they have had a 45.82% increase on the average of Toulouse Olympique (4,974) in 2022, with the Leythers enjoying their best-ever season in the modern-era.
