Sustaining&building upon current NRL boom

How can the NRL chiefs continue the current boom in its popularity and take it to the next level?

My suggestions would be to announce in the coming months a guaranteed date for the 18th team and invite a bidding process for the potential franchises.

I would also announce that a certain number of regular season NRL games will be taken to cities like Perth, Adelaide, Christchurch, wellington and Hamilton etc for the next 2-3 years.

The nrl can’t dictate clubs take games on the road. The reality is these games only happen if the host city/state is willing to pay $300k plus a game for them and clubs are Haley to move a game to take the cash on offer.

What you are seeing today is what the nrl was like in the late 80s and early 90s

the only thing that saves rugby league is the game and the athletes it produces

it still faces a hostile media and middling support from browdcast partners

further expansion like the nswrl and arl did will continue the current trend

unlike 25 years ago the nrl was weak and prey for union and afl

managing to repulse afl in the giants and suns is perhaps the games greatest victory

the nrl will end up becoming the nfl of Australia and the pacific being the dominant football code

An 18th team in Perth.

A 4th FTA game.

A 9th game in a Sunday or Monday night timeslot.

Some form of double header on FTA to target at least metros (e.g. Storm vs Rabbitohs, Dolphins vs Eels) over a 4+ hour block. Either Fridays 6:00 to 10:30 on 10, Saturdays 6:30 to 10:30, Sunday 2:00 to 6:00 or Sunday 3:00 to 7:30 on 10.

A better stadium plan with reciprocal memberships e.g. if you're a Roosters member you can go to Souths Tigers and Dragons games at SFS.

With better stadium plans, teams sacrifice home games (which are made up for with reciprocal matches) so the NRL can have a pool of neutral matches to take to other areas without permanent NRL teams.

I’m totally biased but the ARL in the early to mid 90’s was awesome and the expansion to 20 teams with the addition of Auckland, Perth, North Queensland and south Queensland was unreal.

felt like a new dawn for the game similar to that of the launch of the premier league in England in the early 90’s and was all very exciting with new teams in new cities, new colours, new fans and big crowds.

get the feeling we could be onto something similar today with more expansion to 18 teams in a few years time and maybe even 20 teams by the mid 2030’s.

also how crazy is it to be using the phrase “mid 2030’s”😂😂

I often wonder where the game would be today if not for super league

it set back rugby league here probably close to 15 years

Same.

scary to think in a good way but thoroughly frustrating at the same-time.

so very rugby league. Sometimes we truly are our own worst enemy.

As bad a sport as afl is it’s very well run and took full advantage of rugby leagues weakness

union tried too and has a good run until they self imploded

league still has a lot of obstacles yet and it’s getting boring always talking about potential and what ifs

20 teams again would be the way to go to really surpass afl

Exactly.

the time for talking is surely over and the time for action is now!!!

we’ve got the product on the field and we’ve got the athletes that make RL the exciting and action packed product on the field.

18 teams by 2027 at the latest and 20 teams by 2035.

There is still a long way to go for NRL with the AFL covering the whole of Australia, yet the NRL only covers the East Coast of Australia. Plus AFL crowd numbers tower over NRL crowd numbers as well, even though TV ratings are practically the same.

Honest question here but why is that?

are AFL tickets cheaper and packaged more family friendly?

If afl aren’t taking notice of the NRL’s popularity, many in the media are.
Why would they be? They are set up already for the next decade. Revenue is massive and growing significantly, they have the capital city footprint they want, a full womens comp and they will soon own marvel stadium outright. They seem to be pretty well set.

nrl has so much potential, but always has had. If it will ever realise it is the big question.
