If she grew up near Tampa, that doesn't make her a "southern girl". Just because you now live in Texas, that doesn't make you a "southern girl" either. Just because you grew up in the southern most part of the USA, that actually doesn't make you "southern".

I classify the end of the "south" being Tallahassee.
