Bulls in fight to make Tigers bat again

Queensland were 3 for 54 at stumps, still needing 84 runs to make Tasmania bat again after day two of their four-day clash at the Gabba on Saturday.
The Bulls hopes of avoiding an innings defeat lie with James Hopes (40 not out) and Lachlan Stevens (8 not out) after a disastrous start to the second innings.
The home side was 3 for 5 inside seven overs after Martin Love (0), Clinton Perren (0) and Jimmy Maher (4) all went early.
Matthew Hayden did not come out to open the second innings after bruising his finger while fielding during Tasmania's first knock.
He mostly fielded away from his normal position in the slips cordon.
In his absence, Love joined Maher at the crease but followed up his first innings 1 with a duck when he went in the opening over, edging to Dan Marsh at slip off the bowling of Adam Griffith.
Perren went next over when he snicked a Ben Hilfenhaus delivery behind to wicket-keeper Sean Clingeleffer, and then Griffith bagged his second wicket when Maher was caught by George Bailey.
The Tigers took first innings points when they posted 334 in reply to Queenslands first innings of 196.
Michael Di Venuto (88) and Travis Birt (65) set the platform for the Tigers while Brett Geeves (65 off 77 balls) provided some lower order entertainment.
Andy Bichel was the pick of the Queensland bowlers, taking 4 for 107 from 31 overs, while Hopes snared 2 for 49.

Haurie would have inspired the Bulls but nevermind he is concentrating on being a star for NSW this year!

Rogers and North put Warriors in control

Unbeaten centuries to Chris Rogers and Marcus North put Western Australia in a commanding position at stumps on day one of their first-class match against Victoria at the WACA ground in Perth on Sunday.

Rogers finished the day on 184 while North was not out on 103, as the Warriors reached 2 for 359 at the close of play.

The home side had won the toss and elected to bat, a wise decision in light of the performances of Rogers and North, whose third-wicket partnership stood at 231 runs.

Rogers' innings so far included 29 fours and he teamed up with North in the second session after the Warriors' lost their first two wickets, that of Test opener Justin Langer and first drop Shaun Marsh.

Langer was caught by Cameron White off the bowling of Andrew McDonald for 25 in the opening session while Marsh fell after lunch when he was trapped lbw by Test great Shane Warne, who is making a rare appearance for the Bushrangers ahead of the upcoming Ashes series.

Marsh and Rogers had added 68 runs for the second wicket.

Rogers brought up his century prior to tea and following the tea break - at which point the Warriors were 2 for 208 - he and North continued their attack on the Victorian bowling.

The pair guided the Warriors through to stumps with North posting his ton late in the final session.

Rogers, North fall short of record

Western Australian batsmen Chris Rogers and Marcus North fell five runs short of scoring the highest ever partnership in Australian first-class cricket in the four-day match against Victoria at the WACA ground in Perth.

Rogers and North added a record 459 for the third wicket, before Rogers was out for 279 during the second session on day two when he was caught by Lloyd Mash off Cameron White.

The Australian first-class record for the highest partnership for any wicket is 464.

North remained unbeaten on 239 when the Warriors declared their innings at 3 for 608.

Shane Warne (1 for 113), Andrew McDonald (1 for 104) and White (1 for 90) each took one wicket for the Bushrangers, who made a nervous start to their first innings.

The visitors lost Mash for 23 when he was caught by Steve Magoffin off Sean Ervine while David Hussey was removed without scoring, caught behind by Luke Ronchi off Ben Edmondson.

Nick Jewell was not out on 22 and Brad Hodge was on 3, as the Bushrangers reached the tea interval at 2 for 49.

North should be in contention for the Ashes. He is so much better than Clarke to be honest!

Tigers take points in thriller

By Joel Zander

A captains' agreement set up the prospect of a thrilling finish and Tasmania and Western Australia did not disappoint on the final day of their first-class clash at the WACA.

The Tigers won by just six runs - their second outright triumph from as many games this season - when they bowled the Warriors out with just three balls to spare in the match.

Chasing 401 for an unlikely victory, heroic centuries from Adam Voges (152 not out) and Marcus North (107) were in vain for the Warriors, who fell agonisingly short.

Michael Di Venuto's direct-hit run-out from the boundary of last man Ben Edmonson sparked wild celebrations for the Tigers, who have won both of their matches this season away from home.

Day three saw Western Australian captain Justin Langer declare 200 runs behind Tasmania following an agreement with counterpart Dan Marsh to make a game of it.

Marsh kept his part of the bargain, declaring his team's second innings closed at 7 for 200 this morning to set the home side 401 to win from 81 overs.

The Warriors almost did it too, only to have the rug pulled from under them right at the death.

Quick Ben Hilfenhaus was the hero with the ball for the Tigers, taking 5 for 79 from 17 overs.

Tim Paine took the man-of-the-match award for Tasmania, his 215 setting up the Tigers' 7 for 553 declared in the first innings.

Tasmania beat Queensland by seven wickets in their first game of the season at the Gabba.

Geez NSW is having a shocker this season. Already lost 4 wickets and Cowan faced 60 odd balls for 9 runs :-s
Haddin and Thornely rebuilding the ship now.

There is currently a whisper of a recovery from Thornley and Haddin.

NSW are 4 for 156, with Thornley and Haddin both posting half centuries. This has to be the big partnership as well, because there is no reliable batting to come.

Henriques is in next, but he has struggled since coming into the team with both bat and ball, and after him we have the bowlers.

Hopes has got better this season, God knows how but he has.

Henriques was good with the bat in our first Ford Ranger cup game.

Sensational knock by Haddin, very Gilly like. Almost a run a ball while Thornely looks like he is finding some form.

Bulls, Blues share honours at Gabba

Honours were shared on the opening day of the first-class match between Queensland and New South Wales at the Gabba with the home side 294 runs behind at stumps.

After bowling the Blues out for 323, the Bulls moved to 29 without loss before the close of play, with Jimmy Maher (8) and Lachlan Stevens (14) surviving nine overs before poor light stopped play.

Earlier, a fighting 205-run partnership between Brad Haddin and Dominic Thornely put the New South Wales innings back on track after a disastrous opening session.

The pair came together with the Blues languishing at 4 for 52 and pushed the score along to 257 before Thornely was dismissed for 97, trapped lbw off the bowling of Andy Bichel.

Haddin was eventually dismissed for 139, caught by Stevens off the bowling of Chris Swan.

Bichel led the Queensland bowling attack, snaring 3 for 84, including the key wickets of Thornely and Australian Test aspirant Phil Jaques.

In the morning, Haddin won the toss and chose to bat but the start was not what the Blues wanted.

Jaques went for just 3 in the fifth over when he was trapped in front by Bichel.

Greg Mail (22) was bowled by James Hopes, who then had Ed Cowan out lbw.

Cowan had crawled to 6 off 67 balls in 80 minutes of batting.

Aaron O'Brien then gave Grant Sullivan his maiden first-class wicket for the Bulls when he edged the debutant quick to Clinton Perren at third slip for 2.

The Bulls kicked off their season last week with outright defeat at home to Tasmania, while New South Wales drew with South Australia at the SCG.
Bulls

Jimmy Maher (c), Lachlan Stevens, Martin Love, Clinton Perren, Brendan Nash, James Hopes, Chris Hartley, Andrew Bichel, Daniel Doran, Chris Swan, Grant Sullivan, Craig Philipson (12th man).
Blues

Greg Mail, Phil Jaques, Ed Cowan, Dominic Thornely, Brad Haddin (c), Aaron O'Brien, Moises Henriques, Beau Casson, Matthew Nicholson, Doug Bollinger, Stuart Clark, Aaron Bird (12th man).
