United Development team to deliver results

NRL.com Fri, Nov 02, 2012 - 9:00 AM

Rugby League has laid another foundation in the delivery of the game’s strategic plan, today implementing its whole-of-game development structure under the NRL banner to create one of the largest game development units in Australian sport.

NRL General Manager for League Integration and Game Development, Mr Andrew Hill, has said that the centralised development program will ensure that 1.6 million children each year take part in Rugby League activities by 2017.

“The move to a national development model and a single development brand is an essential step for the game of Rugby League and is vitally important to our future,” Mr Hill said.

“This is a very exciting time for all involved as we are able to move the wealth of knowledge and experience of our 400 development staff into one unit, which will also create a stronger presence across all areas of the game.

“By centralising our operation, we will be able to continue to improve our first contact programs and participation initiatives while providing greater support for our staff working on the ground implementing the programs.”

Under the new structure Game Development Regional Managers, will lead the delivery and implementation of game development programs within their designated geographical region, including Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory.

In 2012, Rugby League-based programs have engaged 1,409,946 children with 598,191 children having played in a Rugby League game across clubs and schools with 430, 638 students playing in regular school competitions and formal gala days.

Good news, Grant was talking about this at breakfast yesterday. Something like 500 development officers now under one system and will be many more over the next few years.

He also said they are going to stop using the derogatory "affiliated states" wording. Someone needs to tell their press office!

Yes, and instead of the ever reliable Mr Graham McNaney doing it for all those States, there should be one person per state. Or at least one person per 2 states/territories.

The main thing is they will be under the "NRL" banner. One of the problems ARL Development officers faced, somewhat unbeievably, was that people in schools and others thought the ARL was the AFL. No kidding. This might help that situaion. Otherwise the only other benefits will probably be administrative savings. Although in the short term that will probably be nullified by change-over costs.

The guy looking after development in SA is run off his feet as it is.

Many bagged the new ARLC for showing little in the first 9 months.
Appears to me things are being done in a methodical and calculated manner, not being rushed.
TV deal tick
Stategic plan tick
United development organisation tick
More decisions to flow on in the near future.

Yet the previous admin had no stategic Plan, and no calculated just an ad hoc approach to expasnion. Is it any wonder Gallop was given the bye byes. You cannot run a multi million dollar sport like that and expect success.

Will also avoid duplication, provide consistent resources, improve training for officers etc. grant gave an example of a school in west Sydney that had 3 sets of development officers on the same day from ARL, panthers and nswrl!

The removal of duplication, black holes and differing strategies and goals is the best thing that can come out of a united/centrally controlled governing body.

Duplication only really happens at admin level. Development officers and programs between different organisations are pretty well co-ordinated to prevent it. Well, in country areas it is anyway. I can imagine anything the NRL clubs or the NSWRL has anything to do with might be very different.

"Commission Razor gang cost Joe Bloggs of Murwullimbah his (needlessly duplicated to the roughly ten million organising bodies beforehand) job...Bring Back Gallop"

Or maybe he can get out the Faber Castell 24 pencil set and draw a picture for his column about how this is killing the game.

And Rothfield is on again today in the Sunday Tele bagging Grant for going to WA for the Perth meeting with the WARL,instead of attending a RLPA meeting to discuss money.
FFS.
One minute Rothfield bags him for being hands on the next he bags him for not being so.
The Perth meeting is about structure/expnsion etc,the RLPA is a CEOs responsibility.

ARLC chairman John Grant is fast losing the respect of rugby league players. Last Thursday, the players union finally got a meeting at NRL headquarters to discuss their collective bargaining agreement. Grant brushed the meeting. He thought it was more important to be in Perth for a chat with the West Australian Rugby League, even allowing for the fact expansion is on hold for at least the next four years.

Show how clueless he is, it wasn't a chat, it was a 3 day strategic discussion with a very important future part of the game plus a clear the air with the games stakeholders in the West. Something Gallop never did in all his years as CEO.
