Use of the bench

One thing we can possibly all agree on is that Mary's use of the bench has been terrible.

I think with Thomo leaving this may help as he had with Jack and Tyson 3 players that he gave lots of game time.

What do people think he needs to do differently?

He can start by using all the replacements instead of leaving players on the bench for the whole game getting splinters in their backside.
Then he can have more trust in the younger players and give them more game time.
Then he can actually have a rotation strategy that maximizes the impact of the bench.
Pick players based on the opposition we are playing - horses for courses.
Reward players and promote them on form. Create real competition for positions.
Not very optimistic though.

If only he had done so throughout the season . I am sure that we would had picked up another couple of competition points and that would had been enough to get into the final eight.

I am not suggesting that we would had been Premiers , but it certainly would had been a far better way for the season to end , both for the players and fans . Plus the extra money the club would had received for their appearances , would pay more of our debt to the NRL .

As I said , if only . . . .

We will have a strong side next year.
That's a plus.
The bench is probably more important in 2018.
Games will be won or lost on the bench rotation.
Does McIdiot have the ability to use the bench properly. I hope so.

Three players on the bench for the season.equals 17 hrs and 18 minutes of lost time for a season.thats the maximum so obviously if you take that time off the hard workers that's a lot fresher players all round .just watch JAMES GRAHAM ,if Mary runs him into the ground

Like him or hate him, but Gus Gould had the theory of picking his 4 bench players firstly then selecting the run on team for NSW Origin. He claimed the bench players were chosen to make an impact and lift the team. Mary seems to choose bench players on "What if.....spare parts scenario" and give them 6 minutes at the death!
Our coach and his inept use & understanding of the bench are our biggest Achilles heel.

Select 4 forwards. Why have a utility back on the bench like field and use him for 8 minutes?
Having a spare player in case someone gets injured is just another example if his conservative BS.
Have 4 forwards and use them all.

So just focusing on the forwards and with Thompson gone.
Who would you select as the run on forwards and what would your bench look like?

Sims to replace Thommo and start.
Bench-
Au Mau
Host
Leilua
Sele
Its an inexperienced bench mostly but a very experienced starting pack so it balances out.

We're on the same page for this one Crush. 4 forwards who will provide an impact will do the trick and avoide the burnout experienced over the past two seasons:

Ah Mau
Walmsley
Host
Leilua

With Mann at left wing, the backline can be shuffled to move Mann to any backline position and bring Leilua into the centres.

Why, POSM, why do you keep listing Walmsley? We don’t have him and as best as I can tell there is no basis to think it might happen.

Who would you have based on we have?

I've always believed Thompson was going and Walmsley was coming. Thompson had a year left on his contract and most on here said he would see it out. Walmsley has a year left on his contract and most on here says he's not coming. If Millward is serious about his young gun backs, he will not bring in a high priced outside back, heill use our juniors. We have the speed in our squad, we just need to selet the players with speed. But we do not have 4 top line props and the past two years have shown that we need 4 top line props to progress at the top of the competition deep into the finals. So if we will the prop position, there is no better option than Walmsley and now we have the funds to sign him.

Latimore or Allgood have to replace either Host or Leilua.
Simple.
CC
Not good enough. The prop rotation needs to be 4 top line props. For goodness sakes, with Walmsley on board we have the forward pack to dominate any team in the comp and with the backup props in reserve grade of Allgood, Latimore, Lawrie and Kerr, we have the depth to take care of vacancies due to injury and rep duties. We are one top line prop away from having the best forward pack in the competition. .
