Zinedine Zidane, one of the biggest football legends of all time, a world Champion with France in 1998 and winner of the Champions League with Real Madrid comes to Sydney to receive a well deserved tribute from all football fans down under.

In this exhibition game at the Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday 1 June he will take to the field with many other legends including Marcel Desailly, Franck Silvestre, Manuel Amoros and Robert Pires under the guidance of 1998 World Champions coach Aime Jacquet. They will face one of the best teams Australia has ever fielded, the 1997 squad, including Frank Farina, Craig Foster, Paul Okon and Tony Vidmar.

Why are they playing this the same day as the Socceroos match? Firkin Sydneysiders, always trying to steal the spotlight.

Wonder if Craig Foster will play world class, technical, possesion football?

 was thinking the same thing, maybe at full time he can complain about the French tactics and say the better team lost.

But Zidane playing in Australia , how did all of this come about?

If he dares play one long ball....

But Zidane playing in Australia , how did all of this come about?

It's when this big FIFA congress is meeting in Sydney, and I think Zidane goea around as a goodwill ambassador or something and has played the odd charity match.

There's been a stack of rumours floating around for a while as to what shape the match would take, ranging from Sydney v CCM with him playing 45 with each side to this one, which is basically France '98 v Australia '98.

No doubt Robbie 'I won the premiership with Blackburn' Slater is playing.

I'll make a point of not going.

EDIT: Oh damn canceled.

THREE-time world footballer of the year Zinedine Zidane today denied that he had ever agreed to travel to Australia for an exhibition match.
Organisers had claimed that Zidane was due to lead a team featuring his French 1998 World Cup-winning teammates, including Marcel Desailly and Robert Pires, against an Australian All-Stars team on Sunday.
But the 35-year-old football star pulled out of his Australian visit on Thursday, citing personal reasons, a spokeswoman for the event said.
"Zinedine Zidane regrettably has had to cancel his upcoming Australian tour due to personal reasons, with a view of rescheduling at a later date,'' event managers Octagon Sports Marketing said in a statement.
An Octagon spokeswoman said she believed many people would have sought refunds if the match had gone ahead without Zidane.
"It would be like going to see LA Galaxy without (David) Beckham,'' she said.
Former France captain Zidane insisted however that he had never "definitively agreed'' that he would participate.
Zidane arrived with other members of France's 1998 squad in the French territory of New Caledonia on Wednesday, where they were expected to play in an exhibition on Saturday.
In a statement Zidane said that his "agreement (to compete in Sydney) was subject to contractual commitments which the organisers did not respect''.
And the France star warned that he was considering taking legal action "to prevent the abusive use of his name in the future by unscrupulous promoters to create media hype''.
Zidane retired in 2006 after a long and distinguished international career with France and at the club level with Real Madrid and Juventus.
