Warren Ryan and David Morrow suspended by ABC

The veteran ABC radio commentary team of David Morrow and Warren Ryan have both been suspended from calling games as their station's management investigates allegations that a racist remark went to air last week.
The investigation was launched on Wednesday as a result of complaints made by listeners after last Friday's call of the Sydney Roosters-Canterbury match.
Ryan, a premiership-winning coach, was alleged to have used the term "old darky" late in the second half to emphasise a point.

Love their commentary but that's piss poor, particularly given its not the first time thirsty's been pulled up for it.

Morrows involvement is pretty light on.

He shouldn't have laughed but people often react that way in an awkward situation.

Disappointing from Wok though.

So that means more lightweight commentary coming up on the ABC Grandstand.

No Wok, no Thirsty pretty much ends my interest in ABC Grandstand as a rugby league broadcasting option.

Triple M it is.

Thought Wok was spot on here

"Ryan was warned by management last month to be more thoughtful after he rebuked a female colleague, former South Australian netballer Shannon Byrne, on air after she expressed an opinion in her role as a sideline eye that contradicted his.

"It's interesting, a netballer telling me about frontline defence. Fascinating," Ryan said.
Ryan earned the wrath of some listeners on that occasion and he was warned by the head of ABC Grandstand Craig Norenbergs that such outbursts would not be tolerated in the future.

Should've just fined them and warned them instead of punishing everyone else.

piss poor explanation, he needs to be put out to pasture along with his outdated "humour"

No great loss - yes Morrow is a decent caller but Ryan has been a bore for years. This isn't a first offence either.

The sad thing is the ABC don't have the quality of back up callers.

I don't get what all the fuss is about. Did he say it in a disparaging kind of way? The context is all important.

As for having a go at a fellow commentator and her opinions on defense, well that's a good thing. Difference in opinion is what make radio and TV very interesting.

Did she handle it well and come back at him, or did she just wilt like a wall flower? I don't know, cos I don't listen to these guys, cos I just don't listen to the radio, but as long as he doesn't insight violence, it's call freedom of speech.

All this PC is just ridiculous.

If Warren Ryan was chastised for what he said, I wonder if anyone is going to say anything about Blocker Roach this afternoon saying when the Warriors were on the attack "Here's a bit of JUNGLE BALL!" followed by Tarzan noises.

Doubtful.

2GB actively promotes racism and intolerance.

The White Power Station.

What Wok said was wrong, simple as that. And the people asking about context need to remember that David Morrow had this exact same f**king problem last year.

There's no good way to say 'darky', simple as that.

I agree. But it's also no big deal in this context. It is dumb and insensitive - but that's about it. We can't draw any other genuine conclusions.
