I feel sorry for the good Roosters supporters on here. What a bunch of whinging c**ks a lot of them are.

Most of us can see the refs are not to blame for that loss. We are kidding ourselves as a side if we think it was just down to the refs. Blaming the refs is ignoring the fact we are a disinterested and arrogant football team this year.

Do you Rooster fans seriously believe the refs have it in for them?

Danish answered the question properly but I want to add a couple of things

The Roosters have had 1 "winning season" penalty count wise since 1995 and one season where we "drew"

In other words, season by season we have lost more penalty counts than we've won almost every year for twenty years. Often by some margin like 4 wins to 20 losses. No other team has suffered this over a prolonged period.

The year we won was a plus one or a plus two from memory

Over that 20 years we have had different rosters, different coaches, different rules, different tactics over that period. But amazingly the result is always the same. Is it any wonder Roosters fans believe there must be a conspiracy?

Personally I think the only thing the Roosters can do is what they did last season. Understand you're going to lose the count. Its a given that you will be refereed to a different standard than other teams. You can't control it - so why f**king worry about it? The only thing you can control is how hard you play and how much effort you put in. Last season we won games we had no right to win. Time after time after time we defended and defended and defended. Some of the decisions that gave the ball to the opposition were laughable, some were plain unlucky and some were of our own making but we just kept turning up.

This season we haven't had the same attitude. We don't appear to have the siege mentality required to get the job done when things go wrong.

If we'd applied the right attitude on Friday a bad decision would have made no difference at all. Laying our loss at the feet of the referees doesn't wash with me. We know this is going to happen. Our job is to ensure it doesn't matter.

But this thread is pretty bad. Do Roosters fans honestly believe the refs think theyre a dirty side and they get pinged more often because of that or are they well aware it's better to give a penalty to stop momentum than let in a try.
.

If 2013 was the first year we were getting smashed by penalties that theory might actually hold water, but it's been the same story for 10 years now

People just shoehorned that theory in last year by saying "roosters give away lots of penalties, and win lots of games... Must be giving them an advantage"

Until 2013 the accepted wisdom was that conceding a penalty meant you were about to concede a try. Stats bore this out.

The Roosters defence in 2013 made it pretty much irrelevant, so people came up with a theory that giving a penalty meant they could reset their defensive line.

For all other teams however conceding a penalty meant points were often going to follow, so the giving a penalty to avoid conceding a try only held water when applied to the Roosters. In other words its a useless whinge excuse used by supporters of other teams that don't enjoy watching the Roosters apply themselves in defence properly.

It's also no surprise that people continually focus on the penalties we concede. But what about the number of penalties we receive?

Between 2008-2013 we received the fewest number of penalties in the NRL. (We also conceded by far the most).

And once again, so far in 2014 we have received fewer penalties than everyone else.

Heading into Rnd 20, Souths have received a whopping 148 penalties. We have received 87. How can such a discrepancy be possible without referee bias?

Eight times in 2014 we have received fewer than 5 penalties a game. Zero times Souths have received fewer than 5 penalties.

8/18 received < 5 pens
0/17 received < 5 pens

Now that's a remarkable discrepancy. And I believe it's only possible through preconceived notions and bias on behalf of the referees.

They only need to fart to receive a penalty coming out of their own half. We pretty much need to be attacked by axes and crossbows to receive one.

The three attachments I've uploaded reveal, IMO, that we are the victims of far more than just our own "poor discipline". We are such a statistical anomaly. Why?

Now I expect 99% will reply with "lol @ whinging Roosters fans, f**k off". Which is standard. But at least I can back up my argument with eye catching statistics.

It is the complaint of my mates that whilst the penalties we concede are often warranted, why do they only appear to apply to us?

Its known that teams suddenly become angels when playing against the Roosters but then go back to being sinners the following week against different opposition. I have never really understood how teams can give away two penalties against us one week and then eight or nine the following week. It happens time after time

I think we must cause some delayed reaction on opposition players.
There just isn't any other explanation.

This. Trying to blame the refs if just hiding the bigger issue anyway. Even when the Roosters got ahead with 8 minutes to go I still thought the Knights would win. Chooks just weren't playing well enough and didn't deserve it. Frankly it's better for them they lost, if they got a lucky win on Friday it might have hidden some of the obvious issues they need to address before the finals.

I'm glad the refs 'hate' the roosters and are 'biased' against them. It shows that Uncle Nick can't buy them. He'll have to stick to buying other clubs best young talent and pass them off as roosters juniors to win.

This.

Teams get magically more disciplined when they play us as evident Friday night when Newcastle didn't concede one penalty in the second half.

There was a great thread on the Chookpen about it showing each team's penalties conceded and it dipped each time they played us.

An amazing statistical anomaly that continues to this day.

As I said in the Penalty Magnet thread, if the refs use tip sheets as the stats say they do, they will be bias against us before a ball is kicked by means of going into the match with a pre-conceived notion of how to ref each side.

Even Phil Rothfield feels sorry for us. You know we're being stitched up if that happens.

MISFORTUNE COMES HOME TO ROOST

I NEVER thought I’d feel sorry for the Sydney Roosters.
Forget the transit lounge, the latte set, the Bondi billionaires, Sonny Bill and the caryard king.

This club has been dudded, its premiership defence derailed by circumstances beyond its control. Shocking refereeing on Friday night, the World Cup last year, and Origin injuries have combined to almost ruin their chances.
The Roosters had to provide 15 players for last year’s World Cup, which seriously affected their pre-season preparation.

We get to Origin. They lose Michael Jennings and Daniel Tupou to serious injuries.

That’s $800,000 of their salary cap gone for the run home to the finals.
On Friday night they travel to Newcastle to play the Knights. It’s a crucial game for their top-four hopes. Admittedly they don’t play well but at the same time they are robbed.

James Maloney scores a fair try but it’s disallowed by the video ref.

The Knights score their first try to get back into the game from a set, when they should have been taking a line drop-out instead of a 20m tap restart.

They clearly took the ball dead. In other games, the video refs have overturned line-drop-out calls but in this NRL competition there is no consistency.

These mistakes cost the Roosters 12 points and the game.

Big deal, Roosters had so much good fortune last year with injuries it was eventually going to come to an end

You have quite a few penalty magnets in your team like JWH and others have seemed to pick up from his example. There is no conspiracy, your team just doesn't emphasise discipline in the ruck. And last year proved they didn't have to.

Nothing to do with penalties conceded or why we receive the least amount, but thanks for trying.

Every club has injuries and these guys are outside backs in the strongest roster in the comp. Please....

Wrong. Freddy even spoke to the referees boss after the game and they confirmed the call was correct.

Rothfield at his inept best.

BV, Tommy was on about penalties we don't receive, not those we give away. We don't deny there's ill discipline in the team. I have to admit however I'm really confused at penalties awarded for slowing down the ruck. I honestly can't see what we do differently to anybody else but continually get pinged. Same goes with hands on the play the ball rulings.

As for the other night, we weren't on our game and didn't deserve to win but the refs sh1t me to tears. What sh1ts me more is the team would've returned home on the bus focusing on the referees instead at looking at their own performance.

Tommy's stats speak volumes, but unfortunately most cannot put aside their disdain for their Roosters to accept that they are reffed differently. Last year the Roosters were able to put it all to one side, defend like no team in history ever has and managed to pull off a premiership (with interestingly everyone having a whinge that we had the rub of the green in GF). This year however the team hasn't been able to sustain last year's mindset and the penalty differential has become too big a hill to climb.

When old Phil Merlot-face sticks up for you, it should only confirm you weren't dudded at all.

You can tell an inept journalist when they say 'X team had this and this go wrong, which equals 12 points. They lost by >12, therefor Team X=dudded out of a win'.

The Roosters are losing games they should be winning because of their lack of focus.

If they still desire another title, they'll prove so.

FWIW, a lot of the penalties Souths receive are a direct result of the way we play the game. Teams deliberately slow the ruck and give away penalties because they know we score the bulk of our points off our forwards dominating. Giving away a penalty often kills our momentum and then we have struggled in the past to create - the Titans game the other week illustrates this well.

The Roosters on the other hand play wider and more up-tempo. They tend to blow teams off the park rather than grind away for points. They're also happy to give away penalties and back their defence. It obviously worked.
