Why Brad Arthur is the coach of the year

1) Who is the coach of the year?

Lock me in for Parramatta's Brad Arthur.

Obviously there are fair claims to be heard pushing the case of the likes of Geoff Toovey, Ivan Cleary and Paul Green, and to be honest it's probably an award we shouldn't sign off on until the grand final.

However, I vote for Arthur, regardless of what may happen over the next two weeks, and by that I mean even if the Eels miss the finals.

Last Friday night Parramatta achieved quite a milestone with their tremendous victory over Manly.

The Eels' 12th win of the season meant they have now won more games in 2014 than 2013 and 2012 combined.

To fight back from 12-nil down was tremendous. To keep the competition leaders scoreless in the second half was outstanding. Aside from all that, their style of play is just great to watch. And Arthur is deserving of much credit for that.

He took on a team that in 2013 won just five matches and conceded a whopping 740 points. They conceded on average 31 points per game and scored 14.

I believe Parramatta will beat Newcastle this weekend, and then all that stands between them and finals football is somewhat ironically a team coached by Ricky Stuart in Round 26.

If the Eels play finals, then Arthur must surely be an absolute special for coach of the year.

Taking a bunch of dispirited deadbeats, seeing them thrashed early on in the season, and finally overcoming the best team in the comp in the late stages.

It's the kind of thing Hollywood movies are made of!

Yep, unless Penrith or the cowboys win the comp, then clearly/green deserves it

I would even say that if Penrith can win the minor premiership from here (unlikely, but not unachieveable) that Ivan Cleary should get it. Penrith are also in a position to run in the bottom half of the 8, so we will see.

I think Cowboys have often been underachievers, if Cowboys won the comp i would say Green for coach of the year.

If Parra make the Top 8 and win a game or two in the finals I think Arthur would be a special...

It might be high pressure (and I agree there is more pressure on the Broncos than any other club) but it's also f**ken easy. They have a massive competitive advantage in recruitment and retention. They should make the finals every year and win a comp about every five years.

Parramatta Eels to extend coach Brad Arthur's deal

Date
October 22, 2014 - 11:00PM

Chris Barrett and Adrian Proszenko

Parramatta are endeavouring to move ahead with life after Jarryd Hayne and will begin by upgrading and extending the contract of head coach Brad Arthur until the end of the 2017 season.

Arthur and Eels chief executive Scott Seward are both away on holidays but a new deal for the coach, who steered Parramatta from consecutive wooden spoons to 10th spot in the NRL last season, is expected to be signed off soon after their return next week.

The development comes as the newly cashed-up and Hayne-less Parramatta consider candidates to add to their roster, with Manly and New Zealand five-eighth Kieran Foran emerging as the marquee player on top of their hit list.

The decision to lock Arthur in for an additional season is a significant display of faith in the 40-year-old who was able to turn around the fortunes of a team that has operated in recent seasons in an environment tainted by boardroom dysfunction.

The former Melbourne and Manly assistant was originally handed a two-year contract, with an option for a third year, when he took over last October following the exit of Ricky Stuart.

He will, of course, not have the luxury of having his best player, Hayne, at his disposal as he seeks to take the next step at Parramatta and deliver a first semi-finals appearance since 2009 and, depending on how the fullback's American football ambitions pan out, he may not have him back again.

However, the Eels' extension of Arthur's tenure is strongly motivated by a desire within management to create stability in the coaching ranks at Pirtek Stadium, a trait not always in healthy supply as the likes of Jason Taylor, Michael Hagan, Daniel Anderson, Steve Kearney and Stuart have come and gone as head coaches in the past seven years.

As a result, Parramatta are also set to offer one-year contract extensions to their assistant coaches, Peter Gentle and Steve Murphy.

"We want to give the playing group every confidence in the coach being there for a long time," chairman Steve Sharp said.

"[Arthur] has instilled a real confidence in the young players in the club this year. We've seen the emergence of people like Semi Radradra and Bureta Faraimo under his tutelage and young players like Tepai Moeroa and Manu Ma'u reaped the benefits because of the discipline that Brad brings into the organisation.

"He's a true blue football coach and the players can relate to him in every aspect."

Parramatta powerbrokers are assessing how best to spend the cash freed up by Hayne's unexpected departure.

Anthony Watmough is expected to join the club when a release can be negotiated from Manly and he may not be the only player to transfer across from the arch rivals.

Foran is off contract at the end of next year and is viewed as a player who can transform the resurgent Eels into genuine contenders. Foran is close to Watmough and also has a good relationship with Arthur from their time together at Brookvale.

Brett Stewart is another potential player of interest although it is more probable the Eels will look for a quality half they can build the team around rather than a like-for-like replacement for Hayne. The blue and golds will also consider Josh Hoffman, who is contracted to Brisbane but been given permission to look at other options. Cronulla have also expressed interest in Hoffman but are more likely to end up with Broncos teammate on the outer Ben Barba.

The Eels are likely to pick up Gold Coast's Brad Takarangi, who was advanced in his discussions with Wests Tigers before Jason Taylor was appointed the club's head coach. Although there is no official announcement as yet, another former Sea Eagle, Richie Fa'aoso, will also join Parramatta.

Eels Extend Coaching Contracts

Sat 1st November, 03:30PM

The Dyldam Parramatta Eels have today announced the contracts of Head Coach Brad Arthur, and his two assistant coaches, Steve Murphy and Peter Gentle, have been extended until at least the end of 2017.

The move will guarantee stability in the coaching ranks of the club for the next three seasons, a decision made to ensure the club’s future plans can be executed.

“We want to give both our playing group, staff and the clubs Members every confidence in our coaching team being with the Eels for a long time to come,” Chairman Steve Sharp said.

“Brad has brought real change since starting at the helm of our NRL side, and instilled a new sense of confidence in both our young and experienced players - and we know he has a successful future here at the Eels.”

Arthur says the decision to keep entire coaching staff in Blue and Gold for a number of seasons is a great show of faith in their plans for the future.

“Parramatta is a fantastic club and I am privileged to be given the opportunity to be Head Coach for a few seasons to come,” Arthur said.

“While we saw a lot of improvement this year, I want our side to be a top-eight force to be reckoned with every season, and coming close like we did this year isn’t going to be good enough anymore.”

With last week’s official appointment of Paul Devlin as the club’s Physical Performance Manager, the Eels’ NRL coaching department is finalised for the 2015 season, with pre-season training underway.

Thank f**k for stability. And with no Hayne to get injured there is no longer any single incident that could completely derail our season.
