I reckon He is more a middle player where his defence wont be as bad. Also you mentioned 3 edge forwards, you do realise manu and edwards are 27 and 26 next year and pauli only 21?
Pauli is the type of player we need in the middle, a big body with plenty of skill. Plenty on here talk about how we need a big prop with skill and we should go and buy one. Yet we have one and we are willing to give up on him before he even turns 21!! Look at all the other top middle players and check how they were going at 20?
I think I said there are a number of quality juniors behind Manu, Kenny and Tepai. Josh Aloai has already been mentioned by Stagger I think that he is killing it and will be in grade sooner rather than later then there is Tyrell Fuimoano. Two time Australian Schoolboy NSW 18s NYC this year. So with the 3 mentioned then 2 quality players to come I would think we wouldn't value Pauli as high as other clubs short on the edge.
In terms a middle player I don't see it. Yes he is a big body but he doesn't play as a middle player. He isn't the high volume traditional lock with ball playing skills. No one would I think consider Pauli a big minutes or high volume player. He also isn't the tuck it under you arm run hard and bend the line prop. Pauli likes to step sideways first use an offload or step, he certainly isn't a Jnr Paulo metre eater.
I think the comparison with Tony Williams was a fair one. A big body with skill, he floats in and out of games probably had 1 and a half good seasons in his entire first grade career as he doesn't really fit the mould anywhere on the field but you can't leave a big human with skill on the bench. Most dogs fans spend more time frustrated at TW.
In regards Kenny and Manu both probably will be able to play later into their careers due to their later starts and less demands on their body.
Again I'm not saying don't re-sign him, I'm saying that we may get priced out of re-signing him and we have greater needs in the halves and outside backs to overspend in a position where we are well stocked both now and in the future.
