Next week is Magic Weekend - a whole round played at Newcastle's St James Park ? and we're told you could fill a 747 with all the player agents, talent scouts and club officials travelling from Oz. Set of Six will be there with them, hiding behind pot plants at player negotiations.
WTF? there was absolutely nothing in that article about Newcastle Magic.

Anyway, I am really getting worried that this is going to be a disaster. A month or two ago they'd announced 30,000 tickets had been sold. Based on that (and the fact there's been no talk of ticket sales since), I highly doubt they have cracked 50,000. That means we'll be lucky to see 25,000 per day turn up. That's less than 50% capacity.

Really hope I'm wrong though.

Also reportedly over 2,000 tickets sold for the Newcastle Thunder vs York match on Friday night.

Any guesses at the day one crowd? 35-40k would seem a realistic goal to me. Just looking at the fixtures i think today will be close to 40k and sunday a touch over 30k

Also what are peoples thoughts on making it a nines weekend? I have long thought this should be the case and i see koukash has an article tbis week saying as much

The 23rd game really upsets the balance of the regular season and is unneccessary imo. A nines competition involving 16 super league and some championship sides (some sort of preliminary qualifying tournament to sort the sides out) would be awesome and i think it could open up more revenues and audiences. Also there is the potential to integrate that with the nrl nines at some point, maybe to have a third neutral tournament involving both competitions

Hope the weekend is a success anyway and i know its a cracking city to get on it so hopefully the fans get there in numbers.

Early in the week they had sold 40k for today so hopefully it's near capacity. 45k plus would be good.

agree with this. the ESL needs some 9s somewhere - it'll happen sooner or later.

This is great stuff. Great crowd, great atmosphere.

ESL is much more enjoyable to watch than the NRL, and the presentation is so much better.
