But he's on the way down as a player and I don't think you build a top aide in the NRL with that sort of player at fullback.
This is a serious question, because I don't know what your answer will be: do you build a top side in the NRL with someone worse than Gordon at fullback??
Bevan isnt at that point yet. There's still more than a chance that he might never get there.
Yes, I agree re: French. There is no guarantee that he will make it. But he has the right tools in his arsenal to be mildly optimistic about his chances.
We'd be a far better chance of doing something next year, and stronger for the future, with a Munster type at fullback.
Is anyone debating this point? Of course Munster would be a better option at fullback. But he is contracted to another club already - sure, we may have made overtures towards him, but nobody is under any obligation to release him.
The issue is that our junior stocks were kicked in the guts over the last few years, and need some restocking. I really hope that we're making the right moves on that front with recent appointments. But because we have had fewer juniors, we have had to look to a solid veteran to fill the gap - it is HARD to just poach someone else's juniors.... if you try that you end up with Cheyse Blair types (is he worse than Morgan? I think so...)
Don't get angry that we're excited about Gordon. Bottom line is he makes us better next year in 2 crucial areas - goal kicking, and fullback play (defensively and offensively). Goal kicking alone could have won us another 2-3 games this season (that sees us playing in week 1 of the finals). It's a fairly major stride forwards, and it is only a 1 year deal. We will know by mid year if French is panning out, if not, let's see which other 19 year olds are full of promise, and try lure one of them.
