Mary to make Key Positional Changes?

St George Illawarra build attacking arsenal - Illawarra Mercury 11/11/15

DEFENCE will continue to be the bedrock of the Dragons success but coach Paul McGregor is expecting a huge improvement in his side’s attack in 2016.

How a side featuring the likes of Josh Dugan, Gareth Widdop and Benji Marshall could struggle to find the stripe proved the biggest head-scratcher for fans but McGregor is expecting a bolstered roster to show a lot more with the ball next year.

‘‘As a team you always have to have a culture and an identity and I wanted ours to be about defence. That’s what we built our year around last year and that will continue.’’ McGregor said.

‘‘We finished fourth in the competition for defence so we want to stay on target with that and then simplify your attack around the key personnel that we’ve brought in.

“Last year our attack suffered a little bit because of the formation of our side at different stages of the year, having a running fullback more than a ball-playing fullback and having two halves that like to play on the ball.

‘‘With the roster changes you can obviously change your structure to one that suits the players that we have and we can be a lot more rounded in what we do.’’

‘‘It’s always a challenge for Gareth and Benji because they’re both really really dominant players and they like being on the ball,’’ McGregor said.

‘‘It’s just about getting that balance right and what’s the best fit for the team and obviously it’s got to suit their own playing ability as well.

‘‘Their presence and they’re ability to know what’s required for us as a team and a coaching staff is certainly a big start for them and the rest of the team going forward.’’

This, plus McGregor's video overview of the new recruits on Dragons TV makes me think positional changes may be on the way. It is good that Mary is realistic about the fact our attack is broke, so he is going to fix it. I know this time of the season is about conditioning and refining skill levels, but he gives me hope that sending our the same backline that failed the last couple years will not be his solution.

Considering that he is a specialist ball playing fullback or five eight and never played centre until being used as a stop gap for Melbourne the past two years. It shows what a talent he is that he was so competent for the Storm.

Now with a chance to play in his natural position I see good times ahead.

I know it is a small thing but seriously how does a professional journalist and editor get that so wrong?

I dont know too many fans that were scratching their heads. You have the attacking coach with one of the worst attacking records and then appoint him first grade coach is a good place to start...

?Last year our attack suffered a little bit because of the formation of our side at different stages of the year, having a running fullback more than a ball-playing fullback and having two halves that like to play on the ball.

??With the roster changes you can obviously change your structure to one that suits the players that we have and we can be a lot more rounded in what we do.??

??It?s always a challenge for Gareth and Benji because they?re both really really dominant players and they like being on the ball,?? McGregor said.

Heaven forbid he must be reading some of the posts on the forum especially about the halves pairing and Dugan's lack of passing.

Good to see he has highlighted some issues and hopefully will fix them but notably no mention of anything around the play the ball / ruck area.

Maybe he doesn't see this as a particularly big issue like some on the forum do.

It's really three things: poor coaching, lack of structure and not having a fullback who can ball play. Surely those issues can be fixed.

Pretty sure I read a similar article last off season. The word "revolutionise" springs to mind.

The Mockery has pages to fill I guess

doomsayers are a constant . never , ever happy . bring on the new year .

seriously?
complete rubbish article full of fluff which i got two things from:

1. Mcgregor is about 1 year behind the common man in football smarts
2. they take the supporter base as a bunch of fools trotting out that article and hoping we swallow it..
i know its the off season but surely something more of value could have been reported on?

serious question - did you take anything new, or anything you didnt already know 12 months ago from that article?

and yet you jump straight to doomsayer spiel.

He made a huge difference to their defense. Came 4th overall only due to a horrific injury toll. They had the best defense and were 1st till the injuries hit. Compared to how the team played under Price, Mary did "revolutionise" the team.

If they can maintain their defense and improve their attack, they will go pretty well in 2016.

Hard to believe but Mary is even dopier than The Socialist and The Dick combined.

Lol rhyming "Nick" with "Dick" how original! Never heard that one before! Leave the witty remarks to Grouch, you're clearly out of your depth here dumb dumb.

Speaks volumes about your intelligence, or lack thereof.

The article actually mentioned how Mary was going to revolutionise our attack and change the way Rugby League is played...

The new interchange rules will create even more opportunities for those teams that already score more tries than us.

If you can't score tries it will not matter too much how well you can defend.

Yea Old Timer, We spent a lot of time in the oppositions 1/4 with repeated sets and really struggled with points. This is a big worry considering they have been working on attack for a few years now.
