I guess the .02 is because she could fall in like Thorpe or otherwise break. Though it would be odd to break in an 800m. Sounds like she could let the others start, have a cigarette, take some selfies and still win.

Her best time us about 7 seconds ahead of the rest in that event lol

True Phelps is the GOAT but he wasn't talked about that way until he had won a heck of a lot more gold than the great freestylers. Until last Olympics I had heard Thorpe still talked about as possible GOAT swimmer.
The other strokes are like 110 metres hurdles compared to 100m sprint. If the hurdler was a faster sprinter he wouldn't hurdle he would 100.
If Phelps was a better freestyler he would have focussed entirely on 50m, 100m, 200, 400 free.
I say all this admitting that I don't know much about swimming and could drown in a bath tub. Anyone who is more of an authority on this stuff feel free to smash me down.
Well Phelps is an exceptionally gifted swimmer but I'm thinking his wing span and ankles (double jointed etc) made him a born butterfly swimmer.

For the record, if Bolt defends his golds then I'm going to consider him the greatest olympian of all time.
Getting to the Olympics is hard but if we were to compare which is harder to do, it's got to be olympic sprinting.

Agreed - even if they do not win the relay.

Phelps came 5th in Sydney in the 200 fly as a 15 year old. By the time Beijing came to a close he had competed his 3rd olympics and already the GOAT in my opinion. Thorpe is the greatest Australian swimmer of all time no doubt but he does not even come close to Phelps post Athens.

Michael Johnson was a 200 and 400m specialist in athletics and widely considered the best male athlete of his era. He didn't compete in the 100m.

I disagree regarding Bolt. If Phelps wins the 100 fly and 200 im at this Olympics he will have won those events in 4 consecutive games. That would have to be some sort of record to add to all his others. He has only been beaten once on the world stage in the 100 fly since 2004. He was unbeaten in the 200 fly for 10 years from 20002 to 2012 (Olympics). He is by far and away the best racer in any individual sport, ever - it isn't even fair to debate it.

Usain Bolt is a terrific athlete don't get me wrong, but is no where near close to Phelps, whose win % record is simply astonishing.

If you want winning percentages Steve Redgrave (Rowing) is probably even better than Phelps and he did it in 5 Olympics.

Impossible to compare sports anyway.

Phelps will be lucky to win 1 of his individual events this time anyway, they will both be very close.

$6 on bet 365. Might put a sneaky $50 on her. She did beat Cate at the world champs last year in both the 50 and 100 after all.

More likely to win the 50m than the 100m. Bronte still isn't 100% fit, not sure she will beat Cate at the very least.

You do understand the concept of individual sport right?

He is close, actually, they are consistently placed together as the best Olympians of all time.
If Bolt repeats this Olympics....it's unlikely to ever be repeated.
Someone will repeat Phelps down the track.

By the way Cody Miller was actually celebrating loudly for bronze because he has pectus excavatum and has decreased lung capacity (10-20% less).
So because I have this condition also, he was well in his right to be stoked and I'm proud of that yank.
Well done to Cody.

I think Ledecky gave up at the end there in the heat but wow her and Sjostorm are going to be battling for gold.

Yeah I think Ledecky was keeping a little in the tank, she sort of pushed the other field but then slowed down once she got into a decent spot.
But it's definitely between those two.

Seebohm might be having a slump, poor start again and just all around sluggish...maybe it's time to retire?
Maddie Wilson will be back.
