Make or Break seasons next year

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck- has to have a big year next year. Alot of money has been tied up with him and he hasn't been a good buy so far. He got injured after seven games into the season, but he seemed pretty quiet the games I saw him play.

Daly Cherry-Evans- There has been whispers that the Titans have dodge a bullet with his contract. Cherry-Evans just hasn’t shown the form that he did a couple years ago. To be fair the Manly team have been in transition, but the excuses will be running out soon if he doesn’t lift his game.

Ben Hunt- It’s a bit too soon for Hunt, but he had a so-so year. I don’t think monkey has come off his back completely after the knock on in 2015 Grand Final. Even when his formed picked up at the end of the year his kicking game was still patchy at best. If he want's cement himself as the next Queensland halfback, he has to show the form that he produced in 2015

Paul Vaughan- If it’s true that he has signed with the Dragons on the amount he has had then the pressure will certainly be on Vaughan to prove it. A year ago Vaughan was talked up as a potential NSW Prop, but now he struggled to crack first grade for Canberra. There can be no excuses for Vaughan if he gets the starting prop role next year, he has to show now what he is made of.

Moses Mbye- The fact the Bulldogs pursued Kieran Foran suggests that there is not lot of confidence that Mbye is a halfback. There is a lot to prove next year, when Josh Reynolds got injured in the finals Mbye hardly stepped up despite not seeing a lot of ball.

Jarryd Hayne- Haynes got top dollar and didn't earn it on the field despite attracting crowds and sponsorship. Hayne has a credible excuse that he had no pre-season and wasn't used to his teammates, but if his form does not pick up it won't cut the mustard next year.

Agree with all of those on the list so far.

This isn't a hate on the Roosters, but from someone who's supported them in the past, I think it'll be make or break for both Luke Keary and Paul Carter.

Keary was flashy in his first few months at Souths but really fell by the wayside and hasn't really improved since the back end of 2015. His game has barely evolved and he really needs to start taking initiative in his game, not to mention work on his kicking. I'm hoping for his sake he kicks on at Easts but he has a very similar game to Mitchell Pearce and will have quite a bit of competition from other halves options.

Paul Carter is surely on his last chance in the NRL. While there are quite a few backrowers at the club, Carter could end up being an absolute terrier, and while he was inconsistent at his stint at the Rabbitohs, he could really make a fist of it at the club next door. He has so much potential yet he keeps stuffing up, and at a club with quite a poor record of discipline, it could be hard for him to keep his career alive.

For the Rabbitohs I think it's either Robbie Rochow or the Burgess twins.

Rochow has gone through a whole heap of injuries and we all know what that can do for a player. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if he copped a season ending one in the preseason. Hopefully for his sake he can bring back some of the form that got his name mentioned for Origin.

I know they're still young but I think the Burgess twins may have reached their ceiling when it comes to potential. They've lost their grunt and authority up the middle and now just drop the ball every second carry, and their runs have minimal impact. I suppose they did go through some injury problems throughout last season so i'll give them the benefit of the doubt and hope they kick on next season after showing some promising form in the last month. I'm keen to see how they go in the Four Nations.

Not sure I agree with RTS in terms of make or break. If it's another injury-ravaged or less than elite season, he'll just go to rugby union like he's already stated he's interested in doing. From our team, I would think make or break applies more strongly to Lolohea (in terms of him staying in NZ or being lost to another club). Again, it won't make or break his career but he won't stay if he doesn't find a solid starting berth - and none of us fans can see where that'll be.

Yeah, I don't agree with RTS on this list at all, at least not on the basis of his salary or this season. He played 7 matches and did his ACL. That's bad luck. He wasn't bad and was building.

In saying that, I understand that this contributes to a compounded expectation on him- given his potential, his salary, Foran and other factors.

But yeah- Lolohea is our make or break.

From all reports, Vaughan's stint in NSW Cup had little to do with his ability to crack the first grade side. He's a very good player and the Dragons have done well to snap him up.

Ridiculous to have RTS on that list. Or Vaughn.

The rest are OK but considering they've got contracts what's to make or break?

Considering previous history you might think I'm taking the piss here but I'm not. Coaches have make or break seasons not players.
For mine the coaches in the spotlight next year are:

Hasler - what is his plan? The five fat blokes plan was almost successful but the game has progressed, has Des?
Barrett - only his first year but you can see already that his temperament may not be suited to coaching and his masters don't tolerate not making the finals.
McGregor - really just waiting for the dragons board to decide on his replacement. I have a theory that club's should never hire an interim coach because they never succeed and their initial success is based on pressure throughout a club being released after going through a saga. Fittler is the prime example.
Kearney - has to perform before the contracts of luke and RTS expire. Can't see it happening though because the warriors only have simon Mannering who puts his body on the line week in and out, the rest just hope they might win.
Taylor - got his way with farrah so now has to prove he was right in every single thing he does, from how he staples his paperwork, knots his tie or comes up with a game plan to annul a JT or Cronk.

Mitchell Pearce. That he has matured enough that he will stop doing stupid, immature things off the field. It is a big year as he is off contract at the end of 2017 (iirc).

Ben Hampton- was some big wraps on him but he has barely held a bench spot, chance to be a starting 5/8 next year.

Shaun Lane- exploded onto the scene in 2015 has struggled to make a first grade squad since, poor career choice to go to warriors last thing they needed was a 2nd rower. Now at Manly could be a good replacement for buhrer, or could just end up on the scrapheap

Hampton has moved to Cowboys so I highly doubt he will see the number 6 jersey ahead of Morgan!

You know me well enough, coaches are the be all end all in RL imo, I can't fault anything you've said . . . which could be the beginning of a new relationship. The pisstaking I was referring to are the players designated at the start of this thread, none are in danger. Blokes like Slater, Roberts and Hayne need to prove their worth next year . . . doesn't matter what's gone before them

I made up the list on players who have big contracts, potential, or haven't quite lived up to expectations. Some these players are on borrowed time, and now its time to put up or shut up.

I will say though that some of the criticisms on my list have merit and have been constructive. I'm not a Vaughan basher, but it will be interesting if he makes that next step to state of origin or just stay that semi-good level of players who never quite make the leap.

If McGregor stays as coach, his chances drop.

I'm not hoping next year is make or break for McGregor. I'm hoping he's broken and gone by rd 6

It will be dire straits for Queensland if Hunt is our halfback. Rather Alfie pulled on the jersey from behind the play.
