Rumoured Signings

James Maloney going to Newcastle, and Cooper Cronk replaces him at the Sharks. I read this rumor on the lurker and Lurker gets rubbished for full of crap but it's been mention on NRL Marketwatch podcast as well.

James Maloney has another year on his contract and he should honor it. I'm really not sure the Knights get anything out of it by signing Maloney. Maloney can't deliver anything for the Knights if they don't have the horses and frankly the halves there seem to be going pretty good at the moment anyway.

Sharks may think about it if they get anything less then a preliminary final appearance in the postseason.

It is well documented that the Knights would like Maloney but only if Cronulla were prepared to release him. That was pretty much revolving around them being able to sign Cronk who has publically stated he is still up in the air re playing next year. Only yesterday the Sharks were reportedly enquiring about Walker as an alternative option to Cronk.

Would love Jimmy at the Knights but it all still feels like pure speculation in the media to me.

Good move by the Panthers locking him in for the future. He is a gun who plays well above his years. But 600,000 a season? It's crazy how much players are offered these days, J.Reynolds is on almost a million a year isn't he.
It's unders for what he'll be in a couple of years.

$600k a season for the best young half in the game is a steal. Supposedly a 5 year extension which means he would be on $600k or less for the next 7 years.

Knights threw similar money at Kalyn Ponga after 2 NRL games on the wing. If Gus manages to extend Cleary for that long on that little there has to be something dodgy going on. Clubs would easily throw $800k+ at him.

It would either be genius management from Gus or something very dodgy.

Nathan Cleary would recieve double that on the open market. Quite literally some club like the Knights or Tigers would offer him 6m over 5 years.

So I'd be staggered if he signs for 3m over 5 years.

Aaron Woods could be at the Tigers next year if the Bulldogs fail to offload enough players and don't get there house in order. So far though the story is only speculative.

I don't like clubs doing this because it prevented other clubs signing off-contract players who had the money available.

Rumour has it Woods is also looking at a gig as an extra on Game Of Thrones so NSW fans finally have a chance of seeing him get cut.

It's all a matter of perspective.

I personally would frame it as:

"James Maloney has a wife and 2 or 3 kids and will do what's best to set his family up for life (as would 99% of us)."
That's very observant of you ol' mate, a little late though, along with others I've said the same thing since he left the Warriors to help Nick with a premiership. Anyone with or without a family with only a decade to set himself up would be stupid not to go where the sun shines best . . . some players stay where they are and get paid in the dark

A third party deal would get it over the line ... You should know all about that stuff Tommy ?

Not really, I believe Mitchell Pearce is on about $800K, give or take. I would think Cleary would approach his manager and give an honest assessment of the situation. Manager "Nathan, what do you think you are worth?" Cleary "I reckon I am 75% the player Mitchell Pearce is".
