But where would the margins otherwise be? Surely you cant get more extreme in either direction and expect it to be a good thing?
Couldn't they be practically anywhere? Our particular history has led us to this 'centre' and so with our political system of two powers they set themselves on either side of it. But other cultures at different times in history have been way off where we are. Even now they are. Are we progressing, and getting closer to a true centre? Somehow I doubt it.

You'll note the 'two sides' aren't that far apart. They are practically the same anyway. If they move it's in response to formerly fringe ideas getting traction, and even then both parties move in the same direction - have a look at how many right-centre parties make noise about the environment, and how many left-centre parties pay lip service to combating illegal immigration. That's the centre, right there.

For alternatives have a look at 'anti-establishment parties'. That's your loonies at either end of the spectrum.

Yeah I've already changed my argument to our civilization at this time defining the spectrum and the centre. So it's a reasonable centre. But our civilization is just one of many. Many that have been and will be. And that could move the centre a fair way.

I'm not claiming the centre as 'we' see it is in any way objectively 'right'. As you say, in different times and places people have had very different values, and still do. I'm sure our descendants will look back on us as ignorant barbarians, obsessed about the bodies were're born with and so on, refusing to recognise the rights of animals or criticising incest or whatever. Times change. I think we would be just as horrified about them, like our ancestors would be about us.

I don't come across too many merkins who don't describe their politics as centrist.

Yet I've met a shitload of people from all ends of the political spectrum.

Agreed. I don't have answers. Only questions. And doubts. But also hope.

Is it possible that people who claim be in the "centre" mistakenly fear the spectrum is wider, or the extreme margins more populated, than they really are?

In your response, please discuss the role of media in influencing societal perceptions, and the role of (mostly conservative or "centrist") governments in playing to (and capitalising on) fear of "the other"...

Definitely.

Not much more to add to this. It's a good point.

Fear is big business.

Equally though some people sit in the middle because of an inherent mistrust of anything anyone says or reports. I would describe myself in this way - politically ambivalent.

So if this whole GOP / Russia thing is made up shit by the DNC, why is Trump roadblocking investigation links with Russia ? Why not let the FBI investigate and then find zero evidence of collusion ? The White House are not behaving like they have nothing to hide.

Because the FBI leadership are compromised.

Andrew McCabe, for example, took a $675,000 bribe from Clinton associates when he was in charge of the Hillary server investigation. Here's a quote from former FBI #3, James Kallstrom, on how McCabe was running the investigation:

"no grand jury, no subpoenas, no court orders, you know, immunity to the co-conspirators, letting the co-conspirators in on the interview. I mean, these are all crazy things that the FBI never does."

I throw you a bone, Gronky, and tell you what you should be looking at:

  • The Awan brothers. Remember when I mentioned them? Imran Awan was arrested trying to leave the US last week and his trial is set for August 21. Only held on bank fraud charges, atm, but everyone knows these are only placeholder charges;
  • Silkway Airlines running diplomatic shipments out of Bulgaria. Depleted uranium, white phosphorous and small arms...heading to the Middle East and North Africa.
Stop being a useful idiot. Stop parroting what your masters on Twitter tell you to parrot.

Oh, and I haven't forgotten your post about Wisenant, trying to claim it is a conspiracy theory. Nope, I haven't forgotten...
